About The Position

The USAO for the Eastern District of Kentucky has a staff of approximately 41 attorneys and 36 support personnel. The main office is located in Lexington, with staffed branch offices in Ft. Mitchell and London, Kentucky. Unstaffed offices are located in Ashland, Frankfort, and Pikeville, Kentucky. The United States Attorney's Office seeks to maintain the highest standards of excellence in the enforcement of federal laws and the representation of the United States. As a Legal Administrative Specialist (Case Manager), you will join a well-respected team that is responsible for providing a range of legal and administrative support services to attorneys handling criminal matters. Duties will include (but are not limited to): Serving as the primary support specialist responsible for managing incoming and outgoing discovery in criminal matters, including by coordinating with agency partners to collect materials, reviewing incoming materials to assess responsiveness, organizing complex and voluminous materials for efficient review by the case team, preparing materials for production, and maintaining detailed indices of materials received and produced. Analyzing and summarizing evidentiary materials, including witness statements and documentary records, drawing upon knowledge of the legal and factual issues in the Government's case. Assisting attorneys with hearing and trial preparation, and during live court proceedings, including by maintaining witness lists and schedules, drafting subpoenas, assembling and managing exhibits, and operating trial presentation software in the courtroom. Conducting legal and factual research in support of criminal cases and drafting a variety of legal documents such as discovery requests and routine motions, proposed orders, and notices. Providing administrative support for criminal cases, including tracking case deadlines and court appearances, maintaining case files, and entering information into case management software. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Requirements

  • You must be a United States Citizen or National.
  • Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation
  • You must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable.
  • If selected, you may be required to complete a one year probationary period.
  • You must meet all qualification requirements upon the closing date of this announcement.
  • GS-7: To be eligible at the GS-7 level, you must meet at least ONE of the following conditions, as defined below: Specialized Experience, Education, a combination of Education and Experience, OR Superior Academic Achievement.
  • Specialized Experience: One full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 level in the Federal service or private sector.
  • Specialized Experience is defined as experience working in a legal environment performing routine legal assistance that demonstrates a basic knowledge of litigation procedures.
  • Education: One of the following types of education: 1 full year of graduate level education in related field (e.g., Criminal Justice, Paralegal Sciences, Law)
  • Combination of Specialized Experience and Education: A combination of specialized experience and graduate education which when combined equal 100% of the requirements.
  • Superior Academic Achievement: Completed a Bachelor's Degree with Superior Academic Achievement (see definition in the "Education Section" of this vacancy announcement). Education must be obtained in an accredited college or university and must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the duties of the position
