Lecturer or Assistant Professor

University of Maine SystemOrono, ME

About The Position

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CIE) at the University of Maine (UMaine) invites applications for a non-tenure-track Assistant Professor (Ph.D. required) or Lecturer (M.S. required) position. This is a teaching-focused position with a two-year, fixed-length appointment that will play a central role in supporting and strengthening the Department’s undergraduate program. The successful candidate will teach fundamental and applied courses at the undergraduate level, with potential opportunities to contribute to graduate instruction as appropriate. The Department is particularly interested in candidates with expertise in water resources and geotechnical or geoenvironmental engineering. This position will support our undergraduate concentration in water resources engineering, and the new hire will be required to teach undergraduate elective courses in surface water hydrology and groundwater hydraulics and hydrology. The ability to offer a core undergraduate course in geotechnical engineering is also highly desired. Other teaching responsibilities will be assigned based on department needs and candidate expertise. Responsibilities include high-quality classroom instruction, student advising and mentoring, curriculum development, and active engagement in service to the Department, University, and State. Service to the profession is encouraged. Given the teaching emphasis of this position, relevant industry experience is viewed favorably but is not required. Candidates will be encouraged to engage in research and graduate student mentoring in collaboration with existing faculty. While this is a teaching-focused position, the Department and University are supportive of faculty who wish to remain active in scholarship and research. UMaine is the state’s primary graduate-degree granting institution and Maine’s designated Land Grant and Sea Grant university, with an R1 Carnegie Classification. Numerous colleges, interdisciplinary research centers, and institutes provide strong opportunities for collaborative research.
