The Department of German Studies invites applications for a full-time position as a Lecturer in German Studies and Director of the Self-Instructional Language Program to begin in August 2026. Area and time period of specialization is open, 1750-present for example, while candidates with complementing strengths of current faculty are preferred. Candidates must have a PhD in German Studies or related field in hand with demonstrated interest in and/or expertise in foreign language pedagogy and a strong commitment to working in a collaborative team environment, including active participation in the department. An interest in decolonizing the German Studies curriculum and/or forging cross-disciplinary conversations with one or more of Vassar’s multidisciplinary programs is a plus. Responsibilities include teaching 3 courses per year, in German Studies (or a multidisciplinary program) and directing the Self-Instructional Language Program, which involves advising students, hiring and mentoring native-speaker tutors, and recruiting outside examiners from other universities. Though the position does not include any expectations for research, lecturers are able to apply for semi-annual internal research funds as well as funding to attend conferences.
