About The Position

The Department of English, Philosophy, and Communication Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Stout, Wisconsin’s Polytechnic University, is seeking to hire two part-time Instructional Academic Staff instructors to teach on-campus sections in the first-year composition program starting fall 2026. Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.

The Department of English, Philosophy, and Communication Studies seeks colleagues to teach in the first-year composition (FYC) program in a collegial department that values collaboration. The FYC program offers five courses from Basic Writing to Honors English. The program serves 2,500 to 3,000 students a year, and it emphasizes a genre-based, applied approach in which students learn to write for a variety of audiences and rhetorical situations. Adjunct instructors will attend department meetings as requested, are expected to participate in FYC professional development and assessment, and are encouraged to join departmental governance.

Requirements

• Master’s degree in Rhetoric and Composition, English, Creative Writing or a related field.

Nice To Haves

• Minimum of one-year experience teaching college-level composition and record of successfully teaching college-level composition.
• Experience with teaching composition in a technology-rich environment, including familiarity with online course delivery systems, is desirable, as UW-Stout is a laptop campus.

Responsibilities

• Facilitates classroom, online and/or laboratory instruction for one or more courses, including assessment of student performance
• Develops instructional design and curriculum relevant to a course of instruction
• Serves as an initial point of contact for students as it relates to specific course or series content and expectations
