About The Position

The College of Liberal Arts of Mount St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, Maryland, is conducting a search for a full-time faculty member specializing in the 19th Century United States, with the ability to teach courses on the Civil War era, public history, African-American history, or other related subfields. The position may be filled at the Lecturer, Assistant Professor, or Associate Professor level, depending on the candidate’s education, professional experience, and scholarly record. The successful candidate will possess a Ph.D. by August 2026 and demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service to the campus community. In addition to elective courses within their specialty for the history major, the faculty member will teach courses in the Mount’s integrated, sequenced core curriculum, including Atlantic Encounters, and will contribute to the ongoing redesign of the America in the World course.

Responsibilities

  • Teach courses in 19th Century United States history, including the Civil War era, public history, and African-American history.
  • Teach courses in the Mount’s integrated, sequenced core curriculum, including Atlantic Encounters.
  • Contribute to the ongoing redesign of the America in the World course.
  • Participate in school and university-wide committees.
  • Advise students majoring in the school's programs.
  • Develop course curriculum.
  • Participate in assessment.
  • Remain current in their discipline.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
