About The Position

Reporting to the Assistant Director, the Learning Specialist for the Center for Students with Disabilities (CSD) will work with a range of students with disabilities; physical, visually and sensory impairments, traumatic brain injuries, learning disabilities, AD/HD, mental health disorders, medical conditions, chronic illness and the autism spectrum. The Learning Specialist will be primarily responsible for processing and enrolling new students, providing one-on-one academic support for a designated student roster, and designing and implementing workshops for students, faculty and staff to promote a holistic, inclusive learning environment. The Learning Specialist will collaborate with therapists, parents, University staff and faculty to provide direct supports and resources for student success.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in special education, disability education or rehabilitation, disability counseling, learning disabilities, or other related field.
  • 4 to 6 years of professional experience providing instructional and advocacy support for students or adults with disabilities.
  • Knowledge of relevant laws and guidelines for accommodations (ADA, FERPA, IDEA).
  • Knowledge of and experience applying diagnostic testing instruments (WAIS IV, Woodcock Johnson II/III, WIAT, RTI).

Responsibilities

  • Manage aspects of the enrollment process for new students.
  • Evaluate documentation.
  • Assign student accommodations in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
  • Collaborate with students to meet their specific needs.
  • Meet weekly, one-on-one with a roster of designated students to provide remediation of basic skills and promote academic success.
  • Provide crisis intervention and respond to immediate student and faculty needs.
  • Advocate for students, as appropriate, in collaboration with parents, therapists, faculty and staff.
  • Design and implement workshops and group sessions on a weekly or bi-weekly basis for students in support of their academic needs.
  • Meet weekly with groups of CSD students to provide remediation of basic skills and promote academic success.
  • Design and implement professional development workshops for faculty and staff to increase their knowledge of students with disabilities.
  • Support Director, Associate Director, Assistant Director and Administrative Assistants with implementation of exam accommodation and procedures.
