About The Position

The Leadership Program Director is responsible for assisting the Beyond Program Director in the design, planning, implementation of curriculum for the second annual Youth Leadership Cohort at Camp Beyond Binary, for LGBTQ+ youth ages 18-22. Curriculum includes but is not limited to lesson plans, group conversations, activities and excursions, guest facilitators, and youth-guided program activities that are relevant to the themes of “queer leadership” and “self advocacy”. These may include small group activities, solo activities, all-camp activities, special evening programs, overnight excursions and/or topics with specific LGBTQ+ themes. The Leadership Program Director may assist the Beyond Program Director in the day-to-day management of the overall camp program through daily contact with counselors, program staff, and guest facilitators as well as through other duties at the direction of the Beyond Program Director.

Requirements

  • Be at least 23 years of age.
  • Ability to schedule and supervise staff; supervisory experience helpful.
  • Believe in the Beyond mission.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills, including the ability to manage multiple projects and details simultaneously.
  • Possess good character, integrity, patience, kindness, sense of humor, enthusiasm, a high level of flexibility, and willingness to be a part of the camp community.
  • Ability to work productively in a fast-paced, stressful environment.
  • Drive camp vehicles as needed (Gators, Golf Cart, 12 passenger vans, etc)
  • Current First Aid and CPR training, or willingness to obtain during pre-camp training.
  • Skills related to program planning and implementation, such as: time management, creativity, flexibility, public speaking skills, organization, and strong interpersonal skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Training and/or experience working with LGBTQ+ youth preferred.
  • Training and/or experience working with youth in an outdoor setting preferred.
  • Prior summer day or resident camp experience for LGBTQ+ youth preferred.
  • Additional trainings such as Lifeguarding, Small Craft Safety, Wilderness First Aid, Archery, etc, not required, but are a definite plus.

Responsibilities

  • Attend all staff training weeks.
  • Participate in the planning and conducting pre-camp training
  • Assisting in the design, planning, implementation of Youth Leadership Cohort curriculum for Camp Beyond Binary Cohort August 9-15, 2026.
  • Assist the Beyond Program Director in the creation of weekly schedules and rosters for campers and staff members, including units, breaks, and all activities.
  • Assist the Counselors in creating a weekly schedule of daily staff breaks and a rotating schedule of responsibilities for each unit that includes cleaning chores, meal serving set up and break down.
  • Attend all staff meetings.
  • Follow reporting procedures to the Beyond Program Director.
  • Utilize CPR and First Aid training as necessary.
  • Maintain an understanding of NYS Department of Health standards, Girl Scouts Safety Activity Checkpoints, and American Camp Association Standards as pertaining to the program areas.
  • Practice confidentiality and utmost discretion with knowledge of camper medical history.
  • Honor and respect camper and staff name and pronouns(s) as important contributing factors to overall positive mental well-being
  • Acting as a leader and role model to other staff members through enthusiastic participation in all camp programming, utilizing excellent customer service skills, maintaining a professional demeanor and positive, upbeat disposition, maintaining the mission, vision and values of Beyond, and communicating with other staff members in a way that is positive and encouraging.
  • Assist in the day-to-day operations of camp through administering camper mail, snack time and maintenance of lost and found items. Additionally, assist the Beyond Program Director in overseeing any day-to-day operations such as food services, health services, programs, human resource matters, interaction with parents, and camper/staff supervision.
  • Drive camp vehicles upon request of the Beyond Program Director, to include frequent camp errands and/or trips to obtain medical services.
  • Cover unit staff evenings off as requested.
  • Assist with check in and check out procedures.
  • Assist with weekly camp clean up, including sweeping, mopping, sanitizing, trash pick-up, etc.
  • Assist the Beyond Program Director in planning and implementing all-camp activities.
  • Assign staff where needed.
  • Ensure counselors keep program areas clean and organized.
  • Inform the Beyond Program Director of any needed supply/equipment purchases, damaged or missing program supplies.
  • Model self-care among staff and campers. This includes taking all (mandatory) breaks, adequate hydration, attaining a reasonable amount of sleep, balanced nutrition, and caring for one’s own emotional wellness.
  • Adhere to all COVID-19 protocols required by NYS Department of Health and GSNYPENN.
