About The Position

When you work at the Y, every day, you can empower young people, improve people’s health and well-being, and make a positive impact in your community Position Summary Responsible to help improve efficiencies when it comes to staff development and leadership programs including J-Staff, CITs, and LITs. Assist with the training, and mentorship of staff and be on-point to problem solve staff and camper conflicts and/or issues.

Requirements

  • Ability to live at Camp AGQ from the pre-season throughout the summer season is required.
  • Understanding of American Camp Association, State of Michigan licensing for children’s camps and State Environmental Health requirements is preferred. ACA Visitor preferred.
  • Understanding of program development, staff and volunteer training and development, fiscal management, and life spans of programs is critical.
  • Demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills, organizational abilities, supervisory skills, and initiative in program development.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team is necessary.
  • Ability to work autonomously under general direction, within the Y core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility and is expected to determine how to accomplish tasks.
  • Must be able to learn and use Y specific software and camp platforms within 30 days of employment. Must be capable of using basic Microsoft Office software.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • Knowledge of the Y movement and branding is preferred.
  • Multilingual ability is preferred.
  • Certifications in CPR & First Aid are required within 14 days of employment. CPR/First Aid trainer preferred.
  • Chauffeur’s license is preferred.
  • ServSafe certification preferred and/or ability to become ServSafe certified prior to campers being on site.
  • Ability to work in excess of a 40-hour week with irregular work hours during summer camp season: 7 days per week; approximately 16-18 hours per day; with one (1) 24-hour period of time-off and one (1) 6-hour period of time off. Ability to work irregular work hours during the off-season. Ability to be “on-call” during periods away from the camp site.
  • Ability to walk, stand, and sit (including on the floor) for long periods of time.
  • Navigate rough terrain on foot.
  • Exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids.
  • Must be able to lift and/or assist children/teens up to 180 pounds in weight.
  • Must be able to lift and carry food and supplies weighing up to 20 pounds.
  • Ability to stand or sit while maintaining alertness for several hours at a time.
  • Position requires bending, leaning, kneeling, and walking.
  • Ability to speak concisely and effectively communicate.
  • Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency.
  • Ability to view/enter data for long periods of time.
  • Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate program equipment and activities. Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare and communicate camper activities and programs.
  • Operate with daily exposure to the elements e.g. sun, heat, wind, rain, snow, and cold.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and evaluate J-Staff Directors, CIT Directors, and LIT Program Coordinators, Store Manager, Assistant Store Manager .
  • Set expectations with your Supervisees pre-camp and follow-up as necessary.
  • Provide formal mid-way evaluations during Session 2.2 and a formal final evaluation at the end of each supervisee’s season. Coordinate with Side leaders and Cedar Leaders to provide feedback on supervisees cabin counseling skills.
  • Work with J-Staff Directors and CIT Directors on Pre-Camp communication/outreach.
  • Lead, plan, and implement virtual J-Staff and CIT trainings - with the support of other Leadership Team members and Staff Development Directors respectively. Ensure training sessions are executed for all J-Staff and CITs
  • Act as an active mentor for younger staff, and resource to their respective directors.
  • Assist the J-Staff and CIT Directors through tough conversations with their staff.
  • Oversee the scheduling of CITs into dishing, program areas, and professional development. Facilitate professional development sessions, alongside CIT Directors.
  • On-Point to be an additional staff member on CIT/J-Staff time off.
  • Coordinate with LIT Directors on pre-camp communications with LIT participants.
  • Aid in the development and education of Leadership program participants.
  • Support LIT directors and staff in fostering appropriate behavior and positive group dynamics.
  • Oversee and support LIT Directors in facilitating a positive, productive LIT experience including the LIT service project, LIT Trip, and LIT Evening Activity.
  • Plans and directs appropriate in-service (skill, behavior, group dynamics) training for LIT directors and staff during camp.
  • Approve and ensure follow through of LIT session schedule focused on personal growth, community service, and leadership.
  • Responsible for ordering food and beverages for CIT on-camp time off.
  • Collaborate with LIT Directors to plan LIT Service projects in advance and purchase any necessary supplies.
  • Support Store Manager with GFS Ordering as necessary
  • Adhere to provided program budgets and review purchases with Camp Director.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
