About The Position

Besides performing the functions of a Tribal Ranger, the Lead Tribal Ranger assists in supervising and coordinating the activities of other Tribal Rangers. Ensure the enjoyment and safety of all visitors to the canyons; protect and preserve the natural and cultural resources of the canyons. Develop and execute an Indian Canyons Junior Ranger Program which is integrated with the schools curriculum. The Junior Ranger Program is to be held for children ages 6-12. Ensure the enjoyment and safety of all visitors to the canyons; protect and preserve the natural and cultural resources of the canyons.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma required; college coursework or degree in Education, Environmental Science, or related field preferred
  • Two years’ experience in law enforcement, security, or related field.
  • Two years’ experience supervising staff and/or managing youth programs.
  • Strong public speaking, educational, and customer service skills
  • CPR and Basic First Aid certification required.
  • Must be able to communicate well and interact with children and the public.
  • Must be able to hike three miles with a 25-pound pack in a time limit of 45 minutes within 30 days of employment.
  • Must be physically fit and pass a physical examination within 30 days of employment.
  • Must successfully pass a physical examination every six (6) months.
  • Must be skilled in desert and mountainous hiking and in land navigation using map and compass.
  • Must be knowledgeable in search and rescue operations and security functions.
  • Must be knowledgeable in the cultural history, geology, geography, flora, and fauna of the canyons, desert, and surrounding mountains.
  • Must be able to make educational content fun and accessible for children.
  • Comfortable leading large groups outdoors and in classroom settings.

Responsibilities

  • Assists the Tribal Canyon Warden in supervising and directing Tribal Rangers in the performance of all assigned tasks and Junior Ranger field trips.
  • Patrol Indian and Tahquitz Canyons to ensure visitor safety and p.
  • Enforce regulations/ordinances in the Canyons as set forth by the Tribal Council.
  • Maintain and control access to properties with the assistance of other Tribal Rangers.
  • Report and document suspicious or unusual activity to the Tribal Canyon Warden and/or Ranger Director.
  • Respond to emergencies and assist local police, fire departments, search and rescue units, and emergency medical agencies as directed.
  • Maintain vehicles, equipment, and uniforms in serviceable condition.
  • Support visitor center operations and daily clean-up as directed.
  • Conduct and assist with ongoing Tribal Ranger training.
  • Act as on-site information officer. Lead visitors on scheduled interpretive hikes in Indian and Tahquitz Canyons.
  • Provide information to visitors on the Cahuilla people and their use of the canyons, the relationship between the people and the geography, geology, the flora, and fauna of the canyons.
  • Provide exceptional customer service and visitor support.
  • Must adhere to all Tribal Ordinance, Regulations, System of Internal Controls, and Standard Operating Procedures
  • Develop and lead the Junior Ranger Program, integrating with school curriculum.
  • Coordinate discovery hikes, classroom outreach, and hands-on educational activities.
  • Train and direct other Rangers assisting with the Junior Ranger Program.
  • Maintain Junior Ranger supplies, files, and reference materials.
  • Schedule Junior Ranger program field trip.
  • Promote environmental awareness and cultural respect through education.
  • Collaborate with schools, youth organizations, and Agua Caliente Cultural Museum.
  • Research and integrate new educational topics and delivery methods.
