The Summer English Academy (SEA) at the Connecticut Institute for Refugees and Immigrants (CIRI) is a four-week program designed to prepare newly arrived refugee youth, aged 6-15 from Afghanistan, for success in the New Haven public school system. Lead Teachers will be responsible for teaching self-contained classrooms of approximately 12-15 students within specific grade groupings (e.g., 1st-2nd, 3rd-4th, 5th-7th, and 8th-10th). The curriculum includes ESL, creative arts, and science. Lead Teachers are expected to collaborate with the Head of Academy to develop culturally relevant, differentiated, and trauma-informed lesson plans, utilizing a sheltered instructional approach for English Language Learners. A key aspect of the role is fostering students' social-emotional development and building a strong sense of community. In the afternoons, Lead Teachers will supervise activities, and on Fridays, they will chaperone field trips to offsite locations. The position term is from July 6th to July 31st, 2026, with pre-program training and planning sessions in June.
