The Summer English Academy (SEA) at the Connecticut Institute for Refugees and Immigrants (CIRI) is a four-week program designed to prepare newly arrived refugee youth, aged 5-15, to succeed at their grade level in the Stamford public school system. This year, up to 40 students from Ukraine will participate in ESL, creative arts, and science. Lead Teachers will be responsible for teaching a self-contained classroom in specific grade groupings (expected 1st – 12th grade, subject to change based on enrollment). They will teach English, Science, and other curricular offerings. Lead Teachers are expected to collaborate with the Head of Academy to design culturally relevant lesson plans for classes of approximately 6-10 students. Given the varied English language acquisition levels and life experiences of the students, the Lead Teacher must plan for differentiated, trauma-informed instruction using a sheltered instructional approach for English Language Learners. The role also involves fostering students’ social-emotional development and building a strong sense of community. In the afternoons, Lead Teachers will supervise activities primarily led by Teacher Aides and visiting activities.
