About The Position

Human Resources announces openings for a 1.0 FTE Lead Safety Coordinator position. This is a 260-days, Grade N-LS position. GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES Under general direction of the Supervisor of School Safety, the Lead School Safety Coordinators perform the duties of School Safety Coordinators in addition to coordinating, supervising, and evaluating all safety and security issues pertaining to the assigned APS school/building site. The position is tasked to ensure that all mandated requirements of School Safety Coordinators are implemented and followed as defined in district policies, procedures, and federal, state and local laws, and regulations. This position has no law enforcement authority. SUPERVISION Work is performed under general supervision of the Supervisor of School Safety. The incumbent independently uses their discretion to develop recommendations within the scope of the position’s authority, while ensuring to inform and bring particularly complex or sensitive issues or problems forward for resolution. This position is responsible for the supervision of School Security Coordinators (SSCs) to include performance management, time, and attendance, and ensuring appropriate training and development. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS This is a single position class in the Department of Safety, Security, Risk and Emergency Management. This position is uniformed and assigned to school sites to provide safety and protection to students, staff, equipment, and property. This position demonstrates supervision of School Security Coordinators and safety protocols at assigned site. GUIDELINES Guidelines include but are not limited to APS Policies and Procedures. Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS), Code of Virginia, School Safety Officer Licensure Manual and Regulations. CONTACTS Contacts include, but are not limited to, students, parents, community members, visitors, school based and central office administrators, Arlington County Police Department (ACPD). The purposes of contacts include, but are not limited to, exchange of routine and non-routine information concerning the safety of students and staff. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE CLASS (May not include all duties performed.) Supervises Arlington Public Schools (APS) Safety Coordinators assigned to APS school/building sites. Conduct personal observations and inspections related to all aspects of the School Safety Officers performance and duties. Provide supervision and support to the assigned school to improve safety related issues and concerns. Communicates school policies and procedures to personnel and visitors for the purpose of ensuring their understanding of safety and security protocols. Responds to emergency situations and take appropriate actions in accordance with established guidelines to include administering first aid and lifesaving (e.g., CPR) services as needed. Meet with principals and administrators to discuss security related needs and take steps to implement improvements at the school including coordination of security needs for after school activities and programs. Patrols school facilities (e.g. grounds, roads, buildings, adjacent areas, parking lots, etc.) for the purpose of providing visibility, maintaining security and deterring criminal activities. Complete weekly, monthly and yearly reports regarding security related needs/findings at the assigned school. Assist in the ordering and maintaining of uniforms, radios, and any required security equipment. Responds to inquiries from students and parents regarding campus security issues for the purpose of providing information, direction and/or referral for addressing inquiry. Prepares written materials (e.g., incident reports, referrals, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference, and/or conveying information. Conducts and monitors fire drills, lock downs and other emergency procedure drills for the purpose of complying with established guidelines. Communicates safety and security policies and enforcement procedures to students, staff, and visitors for the purpose of ensuring their understanding of such information and the potential consequences of violation. Serves as School Safety Coordinator for APS Summer School programs. Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Law Enforcement, Criminal Justice, Security Management, Homeland Security, or a related field required.
  • Must be 21 years of age or older and successfully pass a finger-print background check.
  • One year (1) of experience or training in a safety, and/or security related field is required.
  • A valid state issued Driver’s License.
  • Must possess a School Security Officer (SSO) Certification as defined by the Virginia Code or be able to obtain within 30 days of assignment/hire.
  • This position requires the skills to perform multiple tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills to meet changing job conditions.
  • Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include adhering to safety practices; operating standard office equipment including software; preparing and maintaining accurate records.
  • This position requires the knowledge to perform basic math; understand written procedures, write routine documents, and speak clearly; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions.
  • Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include health standards and hazards, safety practices and procedures.
  • This position requires the ability to schedule activities; gather and/or collate data; and use basic, job-related equipment.
  • Flexibility is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances: work with data utilizing specific, defined processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods.
  • Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with a variety of data; and utilize a variety of job-related equipment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience providing safety/security in in education setting (i.e., K-12, high-education, etc.) is preferred.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience in related fields can be substituted as minimum requirements for position.
