About The Position

The Lead Patient Flow Coordinator is responsible for identifying and prioritizing patient admissions from various hospital entry points like the recovery room and emergency department. This role involves coordinating and expediting the transport of Emergency Department patients to available inpatient beds, and assigning patients to appropriate floors, bed types, and statuses based on admission criteria or physician orders. The coordinator must notify receiving units of patient admission details and bed assignments, and continuously assess patient flow, alerting relevant personnel to issues and delays. They are also tasked with keeping directors, nurse managers, and other directors informed of clinical and operational matters related to discharges and admissions. Additionally, the Lead Patient Flow Coordinator will oversee and develop unit staff schedules, train and develop new staff, and oversee and develop department processes.

Requirements

  • Three (3) years successful prior experience in a position requiring accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Excellent Customer Service skills, including tact, diplomacy and sensitivity.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a culturally diverse setting with diverse contacts, both internally and externally.
  • Able to perform general system computer skills; familiarity with MS Office applications.

Nice To Haves

  • Medical Terminology a plus but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Identify and prioritize patient admissions through admission records and within the hospital via recovery room, emergency department, etc., records.
  • Coordinate and expedite transport of Emergency Department patients to available inpatient beds.
  • Assign patients to appropriate floor, bed type, and status based on criteria identified upon admission or physician orders.
  • Notify the receiving units of the patient admission particulars and bed assignment.
  • Continually assess the patient flow situations and notify the appropriate persons when there are flow issues and delays in movement.
  • Assure that director, nurse managers and directors are kept aware of related clinical and operational issues (discharges, admissions).
  • Oversee and develop unit staff schedule.
  • Train and develop new staff.
  • Oversee and develop department processes.
