About The Position

The Lead Meter Reader reports to the Supervisor of Meter Services at Bermex . This position plays a key role in provid ing supervision to the meter reading employees, ensur es that timely and accurate readings of customer water, gas and/or electric meters occur , and acts as a liaison between the Supervisor of Meter Services and the M eter R eader . Additionally, t his position helps schedul e and assess performance by monitoring task s, reading meters and performing re-reads . This position requires a high degree of walking in outdoor environmental conditions, excellent time management, and exceptional interpersonal communication skills .

Requirements

  • Must be a t least 18 years of age
  • No experience necessary , e mploye es will be trained.
  • Upon hire, the candidate will need to complete and pass all Pipeline Operator Qualification (OQ) training.
  • Must posses s a valid driver’s license
  • A bility to multi-task , and work independently a nd as a team
  • Exceptional flexibility in daily routines and route scheduling
  • Adequate time management skills to finish daily meter reads in a timely manner , figuring out an efficient way to read meters for that day
  • Excellent communication skills, comfortable interacting with management and customers
  • Ability to interact with unhappy or negative customers in a professional manner
  • Excellent attention to detail for problem solving and finding
  • Ability to walk long distances and prepare for weather conditions, accordingly

Nice To Haves

  • High School D iploma or GED
  • Additional 6 months of meter reading experience is a plus
  • 1 year of continuous work with the same employer, and/or 6 or more months working outdoors

Responsibilities

  • Examine readings obtained by other Meter Readers prior to transfer in to the billing system to assure us ability by the system.
  • Prepare monthly meter reading route schedules for Meter Readers
  • A ssign Meter Readers the daily task of read ing all utility meters within a day ’s cycle.
  • Input customer readings to handheld computers prior to route being read.
  • Perform daily loading and preparation of handheld meter reading devices to ensure they are all set up and meters are in proper sequence.
  • Report hazards or non-standard conditions to supervisor for correction
  • Review “missed reading s ” and other problems which require special follow up with M eter R eaders daily
  • Ensure that M eter R eader equipment is available and functioning, notifies supervisor of equipment deficiencies.
  • Refer all consumer complaints to the appropriate authorities
  • P rovide general information about the meter services to customers, when applicable
  • Read meters on a daily and/or special basis, typically on a customer’s premises for service bills
  • Carr y out assigned duties in the req uired time frame for cycle readings , assign sequence numbers to new services , and rearrange meter re ading routes as necessary
  • Inspect meters and reports damage or apparent malfunctions to assigned supervisor
  • Evaluate unsafe conditions or may be to clean out meter boxes
  • Use electric, gas, and water meter reading devices
  • Use hand tools such as a screwdriver, pliers, flashlights, keys, gas detectors, generators, pumps, hand pumps, shovels, lid handles, etc.
  • Use printed materials such as service orders, maps, manuals, and computer printouts
  • A ssist with training of new M eter R eaders
  • Extensively walk and stand for much of the workday
  • Walk for long distances (occasionally up to 20 miles per day) in various weather conditions (rain, sleet, hail, snow, extreme heat or cold, etc.)
  • Exert physical force moving objects (routinely 10lbs of force, up to an occasional 50lbs of force)
  • Other duties as assigned.
