About The Position

Adventist HealthCare seeks to hire an experienced Lead Coding Specialist for our Medical Coding Department who will embrace our mission to extend God’s care through the ministry of physical, mental, and spiritual healing. As a Lead Coding Specialist, you will: Conduct reviews to validate I-10-CM diagnosis codes and PCS procedure codes for inpatient bill hold related to PSI, PPC & other reimbursement conventions to be resolved prior to final coded data. Manages daily DNFB and DNFC reports and work queues for un-coded or outstanding records. Under the direction of the coding manager, the coding specialist lead should be proficient in communicating with the coding team. Oversees coding corrections, abstracts elements for HSCRC submissions, and ensures coding compliance with coding standards. Liaison between coding and other departments, managing coding-related tasks and denials. Provides mentoring support to coders on coding questions/reviews and manages coding improvements. Collaborate with the Coding Manager on education and training for coders, and cross–training the coding team as needed. Ensures consistency and accuracy of coded data for records that may include sending physician queries as needed. Monitor coding query responses and distribute them to the coding team. Coding inpatient and outpatient discharges occasionally, and Interim Bills when necessary. Monitoring of coders' overall productivity and quality measures. Utilizes computerized encoder and other systems related to completing the coding process. Maintains knowledge of applicable coding rules, regulatory updates, policies, and guidelines impacting coding.

Requirements

  • Minimum of five (5) years of coding in an acute hospital setting
  • Three (3) year of experience leading and performing in a coding team environment.
  • Proficiency in computer skills relating to coding software, and Health Information Management systems such as Electronic Health Record (EHR).
  • Demonstrate knowledge of coded data using code sets, including ICD10-CM/PCS, CPT, HCPCS, IPPS coding and reimbursement regulation, APR-DRG grouping structure, MS-DRG grouping structure, and revenue cycle workflows with charges/charge master, and code edits.
  • Knowledge of coding audits processes, denials management, and documentation improvement for coding specificity.
  • Educated in medical terminology, disease process, anatomy and physiology, and surgical procedure coding.
  • Graduate of a medical coding program or an associate degree in a healthcare-related field.
  • One of the following credentials: Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), and/or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA).
  • Candidates will be required to pass an inpatient coding assessment prior to hiring.
  • Must reside in the Washington DC metropolitan area for this position.
