About The Position

The Lead Aircraft Mechanic for the Navy C-12 Program at NAS Patuxent River, MD, is responsible for both aircraft maintenance and supervisory/administrative duties. Key responsibilities include inspecting and certifying aircraft, troubleshooting system malfunctions, documenting maintenance, and replacing defective components. The role requires compliance with Service Bulletins, Instructions, and Airworthiness Directives, as well as performing maintenance on Ground Support equipment and conducting preflight/post-flight inspections. The Lead Mechanic maintains aircraft log books, ensures adherence to safety and tool control programs, and performs cleaning and maintenance of aircraft exteriors and interiors. Additionally, this position serves as a point of contact with Quality Assurance, advises management on potential delays, and ensures the correct materials are used for repairs. Supervisory duties involve providing on-the-job training, inspecting maintenance performed by other personnel, assigning mechanics, communicating with customers regarding aircraft status, guiding subordinates, implementing performance appraisals, and assisting with recruitment, selection, discipline, and training. The incumbent is also expected to recommend and maintain departmental procedures, evaluate operational efficiency, and follow all company and regulatory safety practices.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a standard four (4) year high school or equivalent (GED)
  • Seven (7) years of experience in work directly related to aircraft maintenance
  • Two (2) years of experience in a lead role in making airworthiness decisions
  • A & P License
  • Sufficient aviation maintenance hand tools to perform routine Airframe and Powerplant duties
  • Understanding and using the English language both oral and written to communicate information or ideas to another person or persons
  • Writing routine reports and correspondence
  • Reading and interpreting documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
  • Adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing into all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
  • Interpreting a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form

  • Performs preflight/post-flight turnaround inspections and servicing when required.
  • Maintains aircraft log books and historical data as required.
  • Complies with safety, foreign object damage, and tool control program requirements.
  • Washes, waxes, clean, and maintains the exterior and interior of aircraft.
  • Serves as a point of contact with the Quality Assurance Representative.
  • Advises management of problems that may delay the scheduled delivery of aircraft to the customers.
  • Ensures materials issued for assigned tasks are the correct items to repair the problem.
  • Provides on-the-job training to new employees as required.
  • Supervises and inspects maintenance performed by FAA-certified and non-certified personnel.
  • Services oxygen, nitrogen, tires, oil, and hydraulic systems.
  • Performs Corrosion Control checks when required.
  • Assists with monitoring maintenance of aircraft fleet.
  • Provides technical support to the customer concerning the fleet.
  • Assigns mechanics to specific aircraft daily.
  • Communicates with customers regarding aircraft status.
  • Guides subordinate employees and peers when appropriate, collaborating and cooperating with other members of the management team.
  • Implements the performance appraisal system for employees under the incumbent’s supervision.
  • Approves or disapproves subordinate employees' performance and recommends action of corrective procedures.
  • Implements in-service training programs to communicate current information and procedures to employees under the incumbent’s supervision and evaluates training programs to determine their effectiveness in improving staff performance.
  • Recommends and maintains uniform procedures and standards of operation for the Department.
  • Evaluates the efficiency of operations within the Department and recommend appropriate changes.
  • Assists with recruitment, selection, discipline, and training of personnel.
  • Greets visitors.
  • Exhibits positive courteous behavior with customers businesses and coworkers.
  • Assists coworkers and those in other departments to successfully perform job tasks and functions when necessary.
  • Follows all safety procedures and practices as established by the Company and regulatory bodies.
