About The Position

The Employees Retirement System is a Texas government state agency. ERS is seeking a Legal Intern to work closely with the Office of the General Counsel’s leadership team, including Nancy Lippa, Deputy General Counsel and Privacy Officer, and Ashley Collier, Deputy General Counsel for Litigation, to gain hands-on experience in legal writing, research, and analysis. This internship provides exposure to the day-to-day operations of the Office of the General Counsel and allows the intern to contribute to the overall goals of the Employees Retirement System of Texas. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work alongside attorneys on a variety of projects and tasks, gaining valuable experience preparing and evaluating legal documents and providing legal assistance in areas including contracts, litigation, investments, tax, employee benefits, and administrative law, while building both technical and professional skills in a public sector legal environment.

Requirements

  • Enrolled in an accredited law school or graduated from an accredited law school with a Juris Doctor (JD) degree.
  • First year of law school must be complete before internship begins.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts legal research and gathers data to support decision-making processes
  • Prepares and edits legal documents.
  • Reviews and analyzes legal documents and records.
  • Assists attorneys in preparing cases for litigation.
  • Reviews cases for jurisdictional deficiencies and procedural compliance.
  • Collaborates with team members to achieve project goals and deadlines.
  • Prepares reports, presentations, and documentation as required.
  • Participates in team meetings, brainstorming sessions, and training opportunities.
  • Performs administrative tasks as needed to support departmental operations.
  • Adapts and learns new skills as required to meet project demands.
  • Seeks opportunities for process improvement and efficiency within the department.
  • Performs related work as assigned.
