About The Position

This role is responsible for the secure intake, processing, and disposition of returned laptop devices, ensuring compliance with organizational policies, data retention requirements, and eWaste standards. The technician will follow established workflows to inventory assets, perform data preservation for legal hold cases, and prepare devices for final disposal.

Requirements

  • 2 years of experience in a similar or related role.
  • Basic computer and laptop handling, including powering on/off and connecting peripherals.
  • Data entry and record keeping, accurately updating systems like ServiceNow.
  • High-school diploma or GED.
  • Attention to detail, verifying serial numbers, asset tags, and device status.
  • Ability to follow step-by-step instructions, checklists, and standard operating procedures.
  • Basic understanding of data security, handling devices with sensitive information carefully.
  • File backup basics, including copying and verifying data to designated storage locations.
  • Time management, processing multiple devices efficiently.
  • Communication skills, reporting issues or discrepancies clearly.
  • Problem identification, recognizing when something is wrong even if not fixing it.
  • Physical handling of equipment, packing, moving, and organizing laptops safely.

Responsibilities

  • Receive and log returned laptop assets into the asset management system.
  • Verify device details, asset tag, serial number, and user association against records.
  • Maintain accurate inventory tracking and status updates throughout the lifecycle.
  • Execute tasks in accordance with the Device Checklist and ServiceNow work instructions.
  • Document all actions, updates, and exceptions within ServiceNow tickets.
  • Ensure audit-ready records for all processed devices.
  • Identify devices flagged for legal hold and perform secure data backups in compliance with legal and IT policies.
  • Validate backup integrity and ensure proper storage/chain of custody.
  • Perform approved data wiping procedures on non-legal hold devices.
  • Confirm successful data erasure using standard verification methods.
  • Prepare wiped devices for eWaste disposal in accordance with environmental and security guidelines.
  • Maintain strict adherence to data security and compliance standards.
  • Escalate discrepancies or issues, such as missing assets, failed wipes, or backup errors.
  • Collaborate with IT asset management, legal, and compliance teams as needed.
