About The Position

Laborer – Landscape Schedule: 7:00 AM – 3:00 PM (hours may vary) Hands-on, outdoors, and takes pride in making the city look its best-someone who enjoys physical work, teamwork, and seeing the impact of their effort every day. What You'll Do You'll help maintain and enhance Fort Wayne's landscapes and green spaces-keeping corridors clean, safe, and visually appealing for the community. Key Responsibilities Maintain city landscapes including planting, pruning, mowing, watering, and overall plant care Support green infrastructure efforts and keep right-of-way corridors clean and debris-free Operate trucks, trailers, mowers, and a variety of hand and power tools Perform routine equipment maintenance and track work through accurate documentation Assist with seasonal needs like snow removal and support other departments as needed Supervisory Responsibilities Provide guidance and training to seasonal or new staff Assist with assigning and directing daily work tasks as needed What You Bring | Education & Experience High school diploma or GED with 4+ years of landscape or grounds maintenance experience Background in horticulture or related field preferred Knowledge of plant care, weed control, and landscape best practices Strong work ethic with the ability to work independently or as part of a team Basic computer skills and ability to maintain records Preferred Certifications Valid Indiana driver's license Indiana Pesticide Applicator License (or ability to obtain within 1 year) Chainsaw safety certification, First Aid/CPR, and boater safety training (or ability to obtain within 1 year) Technical Skills & Knowledge Experience operating landscaping equipment, trucks, and trailers Understanding of pesticide and fertilizer application Ability to work outdoors year-round in varying weather conditions Why Work for the City of Fort Wayne Your work is visible and valued. Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED with 4+ years of landscape or grounds maintenance experience
  • Knowledge of plant care, weed control, and landscape best practices
  • Strong work ethic with the ability to work independently or as part of a team
  • Basic computer skills and ability to maintain records
  • Experience operating landscaping equipment, trucks, and trailers
  • Ability to work outdoors year-round in varying weather conditions

Nice To Haves

  • Background in horticulture or related field preferred
  • Valid Indiana driver's license
