We are looking for an experienced Laboratory Assistant. The Laboratory Support Assistant is responsible for performing a variety of functions that ultimately create an exceptional patient experience by fulfilling their laboratory needs.

Requirements

  • Basic theoretical and operational job knowledge in phlebotomy and specimen accessioning
  • Must be detail-oriented, have the ability to work independently, establish work priorities for maximum department efficiency.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Outlook) and customer database systems
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to deal courteously and effectively with supervisors, co-workers and clients.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills necessary to handle telephone inquiries from clients.
  • High School diploma and preferably some clinical and/or medical experience as a phlebotomist and specimen accessioner.

Nice To Haves

  • Phlebotomy certification or similar credentials desired.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates knowledge of safe and proper techniques required for specimen acquisition, processing, delivery and storage.
  • Adheres to all hospital, and regulatory policies and procedures governing clinical laboratory
  • Works with providers/patients to resolve basic issues such as assist with order codes/missed tests/add-on tests.
  • Works with coworkers with the common goal of the exceptional patient experience.
  • Addresses issues or situations that require immediate or additional attention (e.g. adverse reactions to phlebotomy) and informs the supervisor or other appropriate leadership of such situations.
  • Maintains inventory of laboratory supplies.
  • Obtains blood specimen by performing venipuncture, finger sticks, and heel sticks maintaining the order of draw and the knowledge of specimen requirements for laboratory testing and diagnostic procedures in all areas and for all patient populations, including newborn, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients, on a rotational basis in accordance with established protocols and procedures.
  • Processes specimens for testing (i.e. centrifuge, distribute and storage etc.) and transfer specimens to reference laboratory.
  • Assist Pathologist- set up bench with specimens obtained from ER/Special Procedures, order tests for reference lab send out. Follow up on results. Attend occasional procedures.
  • Follow policies and procedures to procure the best specimen for testing.
  • Assists in training new staff
  • QC point of care equipment, check room temperatures/humidity control/refrigerator temperatures daily.
  • Participates in internal/external quality assurance, performance improvement activities and programs, departmental and team/committee meetings, and facility-wide training.
  • Obtain patient information/insurance to create visit for billing services.
  • Maintains laboratory records in accordance with established procedures and protocols and performs additional clerical work.
  • As instructed by leadership
