About The Position

The Public Health Laboratory is seeking a Laboratory Scientist 3 to perform highly specialized testing for clinical and radiochemistry samples related to public health emergencies, investigations, public health programmatic grant requirements, and federal government requests. This position will coordinate daily activities of personnel to assure section work is completed within established reporting times as prescribed in the Public Health Laboratory (PHL) quality assurance plan. Additional duties may include: Monitor & guide Lab personnel on test performance & reporting, maintaining laboratory records test & quality control results & assay troubleshooting. Work independently to solve problems & resolve issues interfering with testing. Provide customer service to internal & external partners, including but not limited to the Bureau of Infectious Disease, clinical/hospital personnel, & local health departments. Monitor & facilitate routine preventive maintenance service according to service agreements with vendors. Use laboratory data & findings to produce technical & scientific reports & papers. Unusual Working Conditions: Selected candidates must be vaccinated for Hepatitis-B and will be exposed to biofluids and tissue, sharps, caustic or toxic chemicals, and/or explosives; may work varying hours and must be able to provide own transportation. VACCINATED: Proof of Hepatitis-B vaccination due before first day of work (do NOT provide, until directed to do so) NOT VACCINATED: Qualified candidates NOT yet fully vaccinated for Hepatitis-B must be able & willing to receive the vaccination. We can provide it at no cost (post-hire) and temporarily limit your work duties to prevent exposure. Normal working hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm. This is an hourly position, with a pay range of 32 on the OCSEA Pay Range Schedule. Positions in Department of Health must meet 1 of 6 options: Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science, or medical technology; 24 mos. pertinent laboratory experience or training in the specialty or subspecialty in which the individual will be assigned. Medical Technician (MT) certification. Master's degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science, or medical technology; 12 mos. pertinent laboratory experience or training in the specialty or subspecialty in which the individual will be assigned or Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) certification. Education &/or training equivalent to 60 semester hours, or equivalent, that included 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses; 30 mos. pertinent laboratory experience commensurate with job duties to be performed as outlined per approved position description on file. Education &/or training equivalent to 60 semester hours, or equivalent, that included 24 semester hours of science that included-- 6 semester hours of chemistry; 6 semester hours of biology; and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination; 30 mos. documented laboratory exp. in each specialty in which the individual performs high complexity testing. 12 mos. exp. as a Laboratory Scientist 2 (83292) in a clinical laboratory.
