About The Position

The Laboratory Assistant collects blood specimens, as well as receives, handles and processes specimens for Laboratory testing. This role involves receiving, sorting, and accessioning specimens, assigning them to appropriate pre-analytic and analytic workflows. The assistant completes computerized tasks related to patient registration, test order entry, specimen collection, receiving, and processing. Basic post-analytic tasks include distributing reports, storing, and retrieving specimens. Quality-related tasks such as documentation, maintaining a clean, stocked, and safe work area, monitoring pending work, and escalating priority work are also part of the role. The assistant operates and/or uses basic pre-analytic lab equipment and adheres to all local, state, and federal regulations, codes, policies, and procedures to ensure privacy and safety while delivering optimal patient care.

Requirements

  • High School Education/GED or equivalent (Required in CA)
  • Certified Phlebotomy Technician I (CPTI) license (Required in CA)
  • Phlebotomy Tech (CPT) or Certified Phlebotomy Technician II (CPTII) (Required)

Nice To Haves

  • Associate’s/Technical Degree or equivalent combination of education/related experience (Preferred)
  • Experience in Phlebotomy in acute care environment (Preferred)
  • High School Education/GED or equivalent (Preferred in OR and HI)
  • Certified Phlebotomy Technician I (CPTI) license (Preferred in OR and HI)

Responsibilities

  • Collect blood specimens for a variety of Laboratory tests using age-appropriate techniques.
  • Handle and transport Lab specimens and provide post-phlebotomy care to patients.
  • Receive, handle, and process specimens for Laboratory testing, assessing specimens upon receipt according to established criteria to determine acceptability and taking action according to protocol.
  • Receive, sort, and accession specimens, assigning them to appropriate pre-analytic and analytic workflow.
  • Complete computerized tasks related to patient registration and/or test order entry into the lab information system, as well as generation of collection lists and/or labels.
  • Perform basic post-analytic tasks, including distributing, routing, and retransmitting released/reported results, storing and/or retrieving specimens.
  • Prepare and/or package specimens for transport to another Adventist Health or outside reference laboratory.
  • Complete quality-related tasks such as documentation of work, maintaining a clean, stocked, and safe work area.
  • Monitor pending work and escalate priority work.
  • Operate and/or use basic pre-analytic lab equipment.
  • Adhere to all local/state/federal regulations, codes, policies, and procedures to ensure privacy and safety while delivering optimal patient care.
  • Maintain an adequate inventory of supplies in work area and/or on phlebotomy cart.
  • Participate in managing the laboratory workflow by locating specimens and coordinating specimen recollections.
  • Verbally communicate released/reported results.
  • Receive incoming calls for the laboratory and assist the caller as appropriate or transfer these calls to the appropriate laboratory section or person.
  • Communicate with customers to clarify ambiguous, unclear, or duplicate test orders.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
