The Clinical Laboratory Assistant (CLA)/Phlebotomist Trainee prepares patient samples for testing in the diagnostic laboratory. This includes performing phlebotomy, accessioning samples as they are delivered to the laboratory, centrifuging and pipetting samples, packaging samples, and operating instruments. CLA Trainees also handle phone calls and troubleshoot issues, working in preanalytical areas like Specimen Receiving and Phlebotomy, as well as various diagnostic laboratory departments. Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED (Required)
  • Relevant Work Experience: 1 year
  • Specimen Collection (Fundamental Awareness): Has limited experience, training, direct exposure, or past experience working with specimen collection.
  • Quality Assurance (Fundamental Awareness): Understands the goal of increasing organizational productivity and individual performance by making the products and services within your work assignments more efficient and more effective. Demonstrates quality management practices on the job which result in superior products and services delivered.
  • Phlebotomy (Fundamental Awareness): Has limited experience, training, direct exposure, or past experience working with phlebotomy.
  • Customer Service (Fundamental Awareness): Demonstrates the ability to influence customers. Knows how to verify and clarify the needs and expectations of customers. Responds quickly and efficiently to customer service requests. Participates in and conducts meetings with customers. Keeps customers informed of status via standard reporting techniques. Meets the continuing service needs of a customer group, including requests for changes in work content. Responds to customers with an appropriate level of urgency, energy, persistence and tenacity.

Responsibilities

  • Complete 4 weeks of online lecture material which includes safety, medical terminology and anatomy & physiology.
  • Attend rotations within appropriate shift hours: specimen receiving, anatomic pathology, chemistry, hematology, microbiology and outpatient phlebotomy for phlebotomists.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with peers, instructors, physicians, healthcare professionals, and patients, both verbally and in writing.
  • Answer phones and record messages, collect specimen delivery information and maintain documentation.
  • Ensure laboratory samples are collected, handled, labeled and transported properly.
  • Performs tasks that are typically routine that may impact team's performance with occasional guidance.
  • Utilizes some discretion and research to solve routine problems.
  • Applies knowledge of standards, established processes and procedure that apply to your own job.
  • Provides guidance to entry level co-workers.
