About The Position

The ChristianaCare Laboratory located on the Cecil campus in Elkton, MD, is currently recruiting for a Casual Laboratory Assistant. This role involves receiving, sorting, and verifying laboratory specimens and request slips, ensuring accurate patient identification and test ordering. The assistant will also handle specimen pickup and delivery, maintain equipment and supplies, and manage telephone inquiries, including providing test results when required. A key aspect of the role is demonstrating the necessary skills to provide appropriate care for patients across all age groups, from neonatal to geriatric, and adhering to established safety protocols.

Requirements

  • High school graduate

  • Two years applicable clinical experience or equivalent college courses in the health care field

Responsibilities

  • Receives and sort laboratory specimens and request slips.
  • Verifies match of request slip and specimen.
  • Utilizes patient demographics, medical record number, financial number, provider, and encounter for accurate identification.
  • Utilizes proper alternate guarantor screens for pediatric and geriatric patients.
  • Orders correct blood tests for future rounds on the correct patient for the correct time.
  • Follows all established LIS downtime procedures.
  • Picks up and delivers lab specimens as needed.
  • Maintains equipment and supplies.
  • Answers telephone calls from providers, nurses and laboratory personnel.
  • When required, gives test results in an efficient, knowledgeable, and courteous manner.
  • Prints identification label and affixes to proper specimen container.
  • Demonstrates skills and knowledge necessary to provide care appropriate to neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients, including knowledge of growth and development, the ability to obtain and interpret information to identify patient needs, and provide the care needed.
  • Performs assigned work safely, adhering to established departmental safety rules and practices.
  • Reports to supervisor, in a timely manner, any unsafe activities, conditions, hazards, or safety violations that may cause injury to oneself, other employees, patients and visitors.
  • Processes send-out specimens for the main campus or the reference laboratory accurately.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
