About The Position

Position Summary Performs laboratory specimen collection in accordance with approved policies and procedures. At least 80% of productive time is dedicated to performing phlebotomy procedures. Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • CPR certification required.
  • Phlebotomy certification from one of the following:
  • American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP)
  • National Phlebotomy Association (NPA)
  • American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians (ASPT)
  • Any certification program requiring:
  • A phlebotomy rotation with a minimum of 100 patient collections
  • Continuing education to maintain certification
  • No prior experience required.

Responsibilities

  • Perform peripheral IV insertion.
  • Demonstrate thorough knowledge of specimen collection and handling requirements.
  • Perform laboratory specimen collection for inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Ability to work outside the immediate laboratory setting.
  • May perform bedside testing (e.g., glucose).
  • Adhere to infection control and safety practices, maintaining a clean and organized work area.
  • Communicate with immediate supervisor regarding issues that may impact patient care.
  • Support patient registration processes and maintain knowledge of third‑party reimbursement requirements and regulations.
  • Maintain working knowledge of hospital and laboratory information systems, specimen processing, billing, reference testing, and scheduling.
  • Maintain adequate supplies.
  • Document specimen quality issues.
  • Participate in the laboratory Quality Improvement Program.
  • Coordinate, organize, and perform outreach phlebotomy services as needed.
  • Maintain positive customer service relationships and respond proactively to concerns.
  • Possess excellent interpersonal skills to collaborate with team members and respond to customer phone calls.
  • Act as a liaison between the laboratory and physicians, nursing, ancillary departments, clients, and external vendors.
  • Follow established policies and procedures to meet regulatory and accrediting agency requirements.
  • Maintain regular, punctual attendance per Orlando Health policies and applicable federal, state, and local standards.
  • Maintain compliance with all Orlando Health policies and procedures.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient records and all hospital/department matters.
  • Maximize productivity, customer satisfaction, and overall efficiency.
  • Train staff as required.
  • Work flexible hours to meet departmental needs.
