Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
  • Maintains current Florida license(s) if required for area of responsibility.
  • Certified by a professional laboratory certification agency, i.e. ASCP or eligible, if required for area of responsibility.
  • Three (3) years hospital laboratory experience.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluates workflow in the laboratory and coordinates with all sections to ensure service standards are met.
  • Communicates regularly with the manager regarding day‑to‑day operations.
  • Understands the role and function of all laboratory areas and fulfills tech‑in‑charge duties as required.
  • Assumes bench responsibilities as needed and performs testing at least 60% of the time.
  • Performs and reports routine, special, and point‑of‑care testing following established policies and procedures.
  • Verifies test results and quality control data for accuracy and reliability.
  • Performs, evaluates, and documents all quality control, preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting procedures.
  • Monitors pre‑analytical, analytical, and post‑analytical processes to ensure acceptable performance levels and initiates corrective actions when necessary.
  • Participates in evaluations of new pre‑analytical devices, test methodologies, or instrumentation under the direction of the manager and medical director.
  • Evaluates team competency; monitors results, worksheets, QC records, proficiency testing, and maintenance logs.
  • Ensures compliance with all departmental policies, procedures, and regulatory/accreditation requirements.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient records and departmental information.
  • Maintains reasonably regular, punctual attendance in accordance with Orlando Health policies and relevant federal, state, and local standards.
  • Orients and trains team members.
  • Completes competency evaluations and coaching plans.
  • Provides positive feedback and recognition while also addressing disciplinary actions when needed.
  • Prepares work schedules and assignments to meet workload demands while managing expenses.
  • Manages team‑related HR functions including hiring, work assignments, coaching plans, and performance counseling.
  • Works cooperatively with all customers and responds effectively to meet or exceed their needs.
  • Provides laboratory education to departments outside the laboratory as needed.
  • Supervises time entry for accuracy and completeness.
  • Maintains inventory supplies for assigned sections.
  • Actively participates in the laboratory’s quality improvement program (incident reports, CAP surveys, turnaround times, service guarantees).
  • Ensures competency in orientation, departmental training, and all areas of assignment.
  • Enforces compliance with all safety and infection control practices.
  • Leads or contributes significantly to departmental meetings as directed by the manager.
