About The Position

Amazon Leo is Amazon's low Earth orbit satellite network. Our mission is to deliver fast, reliable internet connectivity to customers beyond the reach of existing networks. From individual households to schools, hospitals, businesses, and government agencies, Amazon Leo will serve people and organizations operating in locations without reliable connectivity. We are seeking a technically proficient Lab Engineer to support our satellite operations and lab infrastructure. This role involves maintaining ground test equipment, supporting test development and logistics, and contributing to computing and networking system setup and upkeep. The successful candidate will demonstrate technical expertise spanning RF, mechanical assembly, and networking fundamentals, while maintaining high standards for lab cleanliness, cable and equipment organization, and attention to detail. Export Control Requirement: Due to applicable export control laws and regulations, candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (i.e., current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum. As an Amazon Leo Lab Engineer, you will be hands-on every day — assembling test hardware, running Ethernet and fiber cables, soldering RF and electrical connectors, and keeping lab spaces clean and organized. You will set up and maintain Windows and Ubuntu systems, configure Cisco networking equipment, and troubleshoot issues across electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, and network systems. You will coordinate with shipping/receiving, track inventory, and support satellite hardware integration alongside a fast-moving engineering team. The Integrated Vehicle Test team is responsible for delivering functional spacecraft to orbit to ensure Amazon Leo's mission success. We do so through development of advanced test systems and execution of test campaigns that help guarantee reliable operation of satellite vehicles in space. The tasks and daily focus change rapidly, and you will often take on exciting new responsibilities to ensure project success. Expect to be deployed to address complex problems by identifying the scope of the issue and quickly establishing innovative and functional solutions.

Requirements

  • 2+ years of hardware development, test lab, space/aerospace maintenance or hands-on engineering environment experience
  • Proficiency with Ubuntu Linux, including system configuration and networking (e.g., netplan)
  • Working knowledge of Cisco managed switches (CLI, VLANs, port configurations)
  • Strong mechanical skills including assembly, tool usage, and hardware installation
  • Basic soldering ability and ESD-safe handling practices
  • Experience running and labeling copper and fiber optic cabling
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to a clean, organized workspace
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs, perform repetitive physical tasks, and safely work at height on ladders as needed

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in a satellite, aerospace, or RF lab environment
  • Familiarity with GEVS, SMC-S-016, or similar space hardware test standards
  • Understanding of RF systems, including connectors, cables, signal paths, and lab instrumentation (VNA, VSA, signal generators, PSUs, data acquisition)
  • Experience with high-speed digital interfaces and RF systems in test environments
  • Network+ or CCNA certification (or equivalent knowledge)
  • Proficiency with lab tracking and documentation systems (e.g., Jira, Confluence)
  • Familiarity with lab safety protocols and best practices
  • Experience with scripting or automation tools (e.g., Python, SCPI, API control)
  • Familiarity with PLC programming, HMI design, command line usage, and scripting languages

Responsibilities

  • Configure and maintain lab computing systems (Windows/Ubuntu) and networking infrastructure, including Cisco managed switches, network configurations (netplan, IOS, Nexus), and Ethernet/fiber cabling
  • Oversee lab spaces, implement 5S organization principles, order consumables, track assets and inventory, and coordinate logistics with shipping/receiving
  • Troubleshoot and repair electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, and GN2/LN2 systems and devices
  • Read electrical schematics, interpret mechanical drawings, and install wiring for low voltage electrical and electronic devices
  • Perform soldering (electrical and RF connectors) and identify/handle RF cables and connectors (e.g., SMA vs. 2.92mm)
  • Support satellite hardware setup/teardown, test rack and electrical enclosure design, and assemble test racks, cabinets, wire harnesses, and automation equipment
  • Support ordering and manufacturing of test fixtures; participate in design reviews of pre-release hardware
  • Write work instructions, assess and improve processes, and maintain attention to detail during routine operations

Benefits

  • health insurance (medical, dental, vision, prescription, Basic Life & AD&D insurance and option for Supplemental life plans, EAP, Mental Health Support, Medical Advice Line, Flexible Spending Accounts, Adoption and Surrogacy Reimbursement coverage)
