About The Position

Works under the supervision of the Laboratory Support Services Manager. The Lab Client Services Assistant's primary job function is to order/label, accession and prepares all specimens for laboratory testing. Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or successful completion of an equivalent High School Exam Required
  • Medical Terminology required
  • Ability to type and operate computer terminal quickly and accurately.
  • Ability to efficiently operate telephone, copier, fax and other office equipment.
  • Ability to use hands for repetitive type and computer entry.
  • Sits or stands six to eight hours a day.
  • Occasionally lifts 20 pounds and frequently carries 10 pounds or less.
  • Must be able to walk and drive in inclement weather such as snow or rain.
  • Ability to follow established procedures.
  • Ability to pay close attention to detail.
  • Must adjust to fluctuations in workload and meet established deadlines
  • Must be able to concentrate on details
  • Good vision is required to proofread reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with the public.
  • Exposure to biohazardous material such as blood and other body fluids.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills necessary when acting as a resource for clients, physicians and other members of the hospital staff. Ability to resolve problems efficiently.

Nice To Haves

  • Certificate in Medical Office Technology or equivalent experience preferred
  • Previous client services experience preferred

Responsibilities

  • Receives and electronically records receipt in Laboratory Information System (LIS) of all specimens. Assures samples received are appropriate for test(s) ordered.
  • Quick registers patient in Lab Information System, orders testing (LIS), labels and accessions specimens for laboratory testing. Enters patient, stay, order comments and/or special instructions in Order/Entry function of LIS.
  • Distributes all specimens to appropriate department for laboratory testing, gathers specimens for final storage, and retrieves specimens for "add-on" testing.
  • Participates in the orientation and training of new employees.
  • Performs receptionist duties including but not limited to answering phones and directing patients, visitors, and employees to appropriate areas of the lab and SOMC.
  • Performs clerical duties including but not limited to typing, mail distribution, filing, charting, and result/report delivery via phone, fax, or mail.
  • Orders and maintains office supplies.
  • Utilizes the automated line as appropriate.
  • Processes PKU specimens for delivery to the Ohio Department of Health.
  • Centrifuges specimens and distributes to work station.
  • Performs other duties as assigned
