About The Position

Under the supervision of the Head Cook, the Kitchen Assistant will be responsible for maintaining the kitchen. The Kitchen assists the Head Cook in preparing meals and ensuring they are served in a timely manner. Helps ensure the cleanliness of the kitchen and mess hall. The employee may be required to work unusual and prolonged schedules, as necessary.

Requirements

  • Training and experience cooking for large groups.
  • Ability to obtain a Safe Food Handling Certification.
  • At least eighteen (18) years of age.
  • Read, understand, and follow recipes.
  • Lift up to fifty (50) pounds safely.
  • Reach with hands and arms; Reach over head to operate various types of kitchen equipment
  • Stand, walk, sit, climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl in order to unload and transport food and supplies.
  • Hand/finger dexterity, handle, or feel items.

Responsibilities

  • Cleans and prepares food service areas before and after meals.
  • Assists in maintaining the accountability of youth and kitchen staff.
  • Provides general all-around assistance for all meals and special events.
  • Assists with the daily preparation, cooking, and serving of a variety of food entrees for large numbers of people.
  • Receives and follows instructions on the amount of food to be prepared to avoid food waste.
  • Operates and cares for kitchen equipment and machines in a safe manner and adheres to safety practices and OSHA standards.
  • Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of food handling practices, to support overall camp health.
  • Assists in inspecting the kitchen for cleanliness including, proper storage of food and utensils.
  • Reports all safety and waste concerns to the Head Cook.
  • Cultivates and maintains a climate that is free of harassment, intimidation, and disrespect
  • Works as part of a team dedicated to providing a safe place for staff and students to work and learn.
  • Promotes the development of positive social skills through modeling appropriate behaviors and reporting when inappropriate behaviors are observed.
  • Promotes feedback from staff and other participants at Nuuciq Spirit Camp.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Follows Camp Policies and Procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
