About The Position

Vessel is seeking a Junior Construction Accountant to play a critical role in maintaining the integrity of our financial records and enabling informed decision-making across active construction projects. Reporting directly to the VP of Accounting, this role supports project-level financial control across ongoing builds. This position is highly execution-oriented and detail-driven, with a focus on job cost tracking, pay application processing, and coordination between accounting, operations, and project teams. It’s a hands-on role ideal for someone who thrives in fast-paced, growth-stage environments and enjoys partnering closely with construction and operations teams as the business scales.

Requirements

  • 2–4 years of full-time experience in construction or real estate development accounting
  • Direct experience with construction job cost accounting
  • Familiarity with AIA pay applications, lien waivers, and retainage
  • Strong Excel and spreadsheet skills; comfortable working with imperfect or evolving data
  • Experience with construction accounting software (e.g., Sage, Procore, Viewpoint, CMiC, or similar)
  • High attention to detail with strong follow-through
  • Ability to manage multiple projects with competing deadlines
  • Experience working within a GC, developer, or design-build firm (not purely public accounting)

Nice To Haves

  • Comfortable operating independently on assigned projects (not a people-management role)
  • Pragmatic, organized, and process-oriented
  • Prefers clear ownership and repeatable workflows
  • Collaborative and effective in cross-functional environments
  • Thrives in a growing, imperfect organization where systems are still maturing

Responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate job cost reports by project, phase, and cost code
  • Track committed versus actual costs and proactively flag variances
  • Process vendor invoices and subcontractor pay applications
  • Support the monthly close process, including WIP schedules and cost accruals
  • Reconcile purchase orders, change orders, and contracts with accounting records
  • Coordinate with project managers, procurement, and field operations to resolve discrepancies
  • Assist with project-level budget updates, forecasts, and cash flow tracking
  • Maintain clean, complete, and auditable documentation across all assigned projects

Benefits

  • Competitive compensation with performance bonus and equity options
  • 401k & Health Plans (Medical, Dental, and Vision), including HSA/FSA options
  • Life, AD&D, and Disability Insurance, plus Critical Illness and Accident Insurance
  • Weekly lunches and team building events
  • Adoption Assistance, Caregiver Support, and Financial Assistance through Employee Support Programs
  • Commuter Benefits
  • Be part of a mission-driven company transforming housing at scale
  • Work closely with leadership and core operating teams
  • Gain exposure to real, active construction projects in a growth-stage environment
  • Help build the financial foundation of a company scaling rapidly
