About The Position

General Statement of Duties The Junior Camp Counselor is an employee of the Henderson/Vance Recreation and Parks Department and thus represents the City of Henderson. The Junior Camp Counselor is under close supervision of the Community Center Supervisor and the Camp Counselor. The Junior Camp Counselor maintains a leadership role among peer staff and campers in an active summer day camp. They must assist the Camp Counselor in the responsibility for the demands and requirements of a group of children ranging from the ages 5-13 years old. They will be assisting with the setup, development and implementation of indoor and outdoor games/activities. They will be assisting with supervision and actively participating with the campers throughout the day. Distinguishing Features of the Class Assists with the responsibility for health, well-being and happiness of campers. Encourage respect for personal property, camp equipment and facility. Set a good example for campers in all areas, including cleanliness, punctuality, cleaning chores, rules, safety and sportsmanship. Know, enforce, and follow all safety guidelines associated with camp and all program areas. This includes but is not limited to being responsible for all campers’ safety and knowing their whereabouts at all time. Conducting headcounts throughout the day and transporting campers from one location to another. Communicate regularly with camp counselors regarding concerns, updates, and challenges. Posse knowledge of the summer camp program and be able to communicate this information to the public. Ensures that all supplies and program needs are available to the camper at all times. Ensure the camp program site is clean and neat when activities are over and supplies/equipment are placed back in appropriate places. Assist Camp Counselor as needed, including but not limit to setting up equipment, supervising and leading activities and brain storming activities. Performs related tasks as required.

Requirements

Excellent public relations and communication skills are required.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the public.
Ability to assist, teach, and lead recreational activities (ie. board games, art and crafts).
Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
Ability to follow the operating procedures.
Excellent character, integrity, enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, self-control and adaptability.
Additionally, your physical capabilities should allow you to actively participate in the general supervision. (Walking, running, hiking, etc.)
Must be at least fourteen (14) years of age.
Must be able to obtain a workers permit if necessary.
Basic first aid and CPR certification is preferred.
Actively participate in camp training, meetings and program activities.
Applicant must positively pass pre-employment drug screen, physical examination and background check.
