About The Position

Looking for a fun summer job that actually matters? Being a Junior Camp Counselor is a great first job and an unforgettable way to spend your summer. You will make friends, build confidence, learn leadership skills, and help kids have the best summer ever. You do not need to be a certain “type” to be a great counselor. Some counselors are athletic, some are creative, some are outgoing, and some are more calm and thoughtful. What matters most is having positive energy, being responsible, staying engaged, and enjoying being active with kids throughout the day. Junior Camp Counselors help create a safe, fun, and inclusive camp experience for all campers. You will work alongside Head Counselors, Coordinators, and Camp Directors to support daily activities and keep campers engaged. We offer summer camp programs at: Springfield Community Pool Summit YMCA Berkeley Heights YMCA Junior Camp Counselor positions are available at all locations. Active Camp Season: June 15, 2026 through August 28, 2026 Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8-hour shifts Camp Hours: Pre-Camp begins at 7:00am, Post-Camp ends at 6:30pm Required Pre Season Training: New and returning camp employees attend several orientations and trainings prior to active camp season to familiarize themselves with the mission of the Y, learn to protect themself and others while at work, and on all areas of camp. Trainings occur on some weekday evenings and weekend days between May 19, 2026 - June 13, 2026. Requirements

  • Must be at least 16 years old
  • Responsible, dependable, and willing to learn
  • Able to stay active and engaged throughout the camp day
  • CPR and First Aid certification required before camp begins

Nice To Haves

  • Interest or experience working with children is a plus
  • Interest in sports, recreation, arts, or camp activities preferred

Responsibilities

  • Assisting with games, activities, and special events
  • Actively supervising campers and helping keep everyone safe
  • Following activity plans created by camp leadership
  • Maintaining required camper-to-counselor ratios
  • Being a positive role model and reliable team member
