About The Position

General Statement of Duties The Camp Counselor is an employee of the Henderson/Vance Recreation and Parks Department and thus represents the City of Henderson. The Camp Counselor is under close supervision of the Community Center Supervisor. The Camp Counselor maintains a leadership role among peer staff, volunteers and campers. The Camp Counselor is responsible for the demands and requirements of a group of children ranging from ages 5-13 years old such as: medical, physical, social, and emotional needs. This position develops, implements, supervises and coordinates all recreational activities. The counselor must set an example for behavior and attitude for peer staff, volunteers and campers, ensures safe and supportive environment for all participants in the program. The Camp Counselor must provide regular feedback to the Community Center Supervisor to ensure efficiency and effectiveness of camp operations.

Requirements

Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
Applicant must positively pass pre-employment drug screen, physical examination and background check.
Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license is required.
Knowledge of word processing is preferred.
Ability to plan, organize and implement age appropriate program activities.
Excellent public relations and communication skills are required.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the public.
Ability to teach and lead an activity.
Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
Ability to follow the operating procedures.
Ability to prepare clear and precise written reports.
Recognizes and responds to opportunities for problem solving in the group.
Excellent character, integrity, enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, self-control and adaptability.
Additionally, your physical capabilities should allow you to actively participate in the general supervision of activities (Walking, running, hiking, etc.)

Nice To Haves

Basic first aid and CPR certification is preferred.

Responsibilities

Is responsible for the health, well-being and happiness of staff, volunteers, and campers.
Encourages respect for personal property, camp equipment and facility.
Sets a good example for campers in all areas, including cleanliness, punctuality, cleaning chores, rules, safety and sportsmanship.
Resolve concerns and problems of camp, campers and parents ensuring that services are provided in a professional and safe manner.
Communicate with parents about participants experiences and reports concerns to camp leadership.
Know, enforce, and follow all safety guidelines associated with camp and all program areas. This includes but is not limited to being responsible for all campers’ safety and knowing their whereabouts at all time. Conducting headcounts throughout the day and transporting campers from one location to another.
Meets/communicates regularly with supervisor regarding concerns, updates, and challenges.
Ensures all policies and procedures are completed as required, including but not limited to following the Emergency Action Plan, cleaning, opening and closing of camp/facilities.
Possess knowledge of the summer camp program and being able to communicate this information to the public.
Ensure the camp program site is clean and neat when activities are over and supplies/equipment are put back in appropriate places.

Transports to and from program/field trip site and ensures the safe loading, travel and unloading of campers.
Completes vehicle pre-trip/post-trip form (including fluids, belts, interior/exterior conditions, etc.) before each time he/she drives.
Organizes, leads, and oversees activity execution keeping activities on schedule and make changes in scheduled activities when necessary.
Work closely with staff to help develop lead and implement programming and activities.
Supervisors Junior Counselors, Staff and Volunteers to provide the understanding of daily programing needs. (ie. camper supervision, transitioning).
Performs related tasks as required.
