About The Position

The IT Server Administrator is responsible for managing and maintaining SEPTA's Windows Server and VMware environments to ensure high availability, performance, and security. This role involves deploying and supporting virtual and physical servers, performing routine maintenance, and troubleshooting complex system issues. The administrator collaborates with IT teams on infrastructure projects, enforces compliance with security policies, and recommends system improvements. Participation in an on-call rotation for critical support is also required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in information technology, Computer Science, or a related field is required.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of hands-on experience administering Windows Server environments and five (5) years administering VMware vSphere infrastructure.
  • Strong understanding of server hardware, virtualization technologies, and networking fundamentals.
  • Proficiency in backup and disaster recovery strategies.
  • Familiarity with PowerShell scripting or other automation tools.
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.

Responsibilities

  • Administers, monitors, and maintains Windows Server environments (including Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, and file/print services).
  • Creates, maintains, and updates standardized Windows Server images for use in deployment workflows.
  • Supports the troubleshooting of server application software on Windows Servers.
  • Recommends improvements across SEPTA's Windows Server environment.
  • Manages and maintains VMware vSphere infrastructure including ESXi hosts, vCenter, virtual machines, and related storage/network configurations.
  • Deploys new guest servers as needed.
  • Proactively manages server resources and make recommendations for improvements.
  • Performs routine system maintenance, including patching, updates, backups, and system health checks.
  • Monitors the server performance and system logs, identifying and resolving issues proactively.
  • Participates in system upgrades and infrastructure projects in coordination with other IT staff and stakeholders.
  • Ensures compliance with agency policies and security protocols.
  • Responds to and resolve Level 2/3 incidents and service requests in a timely manner.
  • Provides after-hours support for critical issues as needed (on-call rotation may be required).
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
