The Communications Desk Infrastructure Engineer helps ensure the reliability, safety, and modernization of the communication systems that keep APS operations and public safety connected. By supporting both legacy and next‑generation RF, microwave, and IP‑based networks, this role directly contributes to service continuity for field crews and emergency responders. Their work strengthens APS’s ability to deliver safe, dependable energy to customers and communities across Arizona.

Requirements

  • Experience in telecommunications, data communications, RF systems, or related infrastructure technologies.
  • Ability to interpret schematics, troubleshoot to the component level, and understand both basic electronics and electrical power systems.
  • Knowledge of TCP/IP networking, network design principles, network security, propagation, and point‑to‑point radio operations.
  • Familiarity with MPLS or similar network convergence technologies, and the ability to support transitions from legacy communications to next‑generation platforms.
  • Understanding of FCC regulations and microwave path licensing requirements.
  • Strong collaboration, vendor‑oversight, and leadership skills, including mentoring junior team members.
  • Comfortable working in a 24/7 support environment and contributing to critical operational and public‑safety communications.
  • Bachelors' degree in Information Technology or related field
  • Requires in-depth level of technical knowledge within a job area and working knowledge of other technical areas

Nice To Haves

  • Technical degree in telecommunication, data communications or equivalent.
  • Ability to interpret schematic diagrams and troubleshoot to component level.
  • Knowledge to transition to legacy communication to Next Generation Network and Radion equipment.
  • Specific knowledge of TCP/IP, network design, network security, propagation, and point to point radio operation using ethernet over microwave.
  • Knowledge of building IP networks using MPLS or other network convergence technologies.
  • Familiarity with FCC regulations and standards for licensing microwave paths.
  • Understand basic electronics, electrical power systems, the basics of the 7 layers of the OSI model and in-depth knowledge and experience in RF.
  • Ability to coordinate and provide direct oversite to Vendor and 3rd part support and other activities within their area of responsibility (AOR).
  • Ability to train and mentor junior level staff and perform as SME of all equipment that resides within their AOR.
  • Ability to work 24/7 in support of Enterprise Network systems and Public Safety Communication Systems, including nights, weekends and holidays.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain, configure, and troubleshoot communication infrastructure that supports APS’s operational and public safety systems.
  • Integrate and test new technologies, ensuring smooth transitions from legacy platforms to next‑generation networks.
  • Analyze network and RF system performance to resolve issues and optimize reliability.
  • Partner with vendors, contractors, and internal teams to coordinate work across assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Mentor junior staff, sharing technical knowledge and serving as a subject‑matter expert for equipment and systems within the Comm Desk environment.
  • Support 24/7 operational needs, including after‑hours response to ensure critical systems remain available.
  • Under broad supervision, responsible for the maintenance of installed infrastructure technologies as well as the installation and configuration of these technologies within specific area
  • Develops design and functional specifications, produces deliverables related to specific projects and assists in post implementation support and system enhancements
  • Diagnoses and resolves moderately complex infrastructure issues
  • Supports multiple systems or applications of moderate complexity (e.g., size, technology, systems feeds)
  • Completes accurate  documentation in accordance with company security standards
  • Ensures processes and requirements are met such as backup and maintenance availability
  • Conducts testing to ensure requirements are met
  • May provide guidance and assistance to entry level infrastructure engineers
