About The Position

The Digital Accessibility Coordinator serves as the agency lead for digital accessibility and universal design within the NC Department of Public Instruction. This position provides consultation, training, system review, and procurement guidance to ensure digital content, instructional materials, and IT systems meet accessibility standards and comply with federal and state laws. The role supports DPI divisions and Public School Units in implementing inclusive digital practices that promote equitable access for all learners This is a field-based position that may require travel to Public School Units and agency locations for training, consultation, and evaluation activities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, computer science or any related field from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of experience in business consultation, process improvement, or requirement gathering in an information technology environment, or Associate degree in business administration, computer science or any related field from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of related experience in an information technology environment; or High School or GED and five years of related experience in an information technology environment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience reviewing and evaluating VPATs and digital product accessibility documentation.
  • Experience serving on IT procurement or RFP evaluation committees with accessibility oversight responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Provide statewide or large-scale accessibility training in K-12 or higher education environments.
  • Lead accessibility training and consultation for DPI divisions and Public School Units, including workshops on accessible documents, media, instructional materials, and universal design implementation.
  • Review DPI systems, websites, instructional platforms, and public-facing materials to ensure compliance with ADA, Section 508, WCAG 2.1 AA, and related accessibility standards.
  • Provide oversight and evaluation of VPAT documentation and accessibility requirements during IT procurement and RFP processes, including service on evaluation committees.
  • Research, recommend, and implement systems and processes to support captioning, transcription, and multimedia accessibility across agency platforms.
  • Develop and maintain accessible templates and guidance documents to support agency-wide consistency and compliance.
  • Collaborate with vendors and stakeholders to address accessibility gaps and implement mitigation strategies for identified deficiencies.
  • Valid Driver’s License Required
