About The Position

With limited supervision, the Internal Communications Specialist supports the development and execution of internal communications strategies for National University, serving both employee and student audiences. This role translates institutional priorities, change initiatives, and engagement goals into clear, timely, and compelling communications across internal channels. The Specialist partners closely with Internal Communications Managers and cross‑functional teams to plan, create, distribute, and evaluate content that connects the university community to its mission, values, and strategic priorities. This position reports to an Internal Communications Manager.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing, or a related field preferred.
  • Three to five years of progressive experience in internal communications, employee communications, marketing communications, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate complex or sensitive information into clear, concise, and engaging messaging for internal audiences.
  • Strong writing and editing skills, with the ability to adapt tone and format for different channels and audiences, including employees and students.
  • Experience supporting change management, institutional initiatives, or organization‑wide campaigns through communications.
  • Understanding of best practices for internal communications cadence, channel selection, and message sequencing.
  • Working knowledge of internal communications platforms and tools such as Outlook, Mailchimp, Contact Monkey, Salesforce Marketing Cloud, SharePoint, intranet solutions, and Community Halls or similar engagement platforms.
  • Comfortable supporting multi‑channel communications including email, intranet, newsletters, digital forums, and basic multimedia formats.
  • Familiarity with analytics and engagement metrics such as open rates, click‑through rates, and participation metrics to inform optimization.
  • Proven ability to collaborate cross‑functionally with Human Resources, Marketing, Student Services, Enrollment, Academic Affairs, and other internal partners.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects, deadlines, and stakeholder requests simultaneously.
  • Experience working within established workflows, templates, and governance models while contributing to continuous improvement.
  • High attention to detail and commitment to accuracy, clarity, and quality and strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively across levels and functions.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience supporting communications in a large, complex, or mission‑driven organization preferred.
  • Experience working in a remote or distributed environment is a plus.
  • Experience within the higher-education industry preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Support the planning and execution of internal communications initiatives aligned to university strategy, leadership priorities, and engagement goals.
  • Create, edit, and distribute content across internal channels including email, intranet/SharePoint, Community Halls, newsletters, and digital platforms, tailoring messaging for employee and student audiences.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of internal communications content calendars, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and timely delivery.
  • Translate complex or sensitive information into clear, accessible messaging that supports transparency, trust, and understanding.
  • Partner with Human Resources, Marketing, Student Services, Enrollment, Academic Affairs, and other internal teams to support coordinated communications efforts.
  • Support change management and institutional initiatives by developing communication assets and sequencing messages appropriately.
  • Assist with executive and leadership communications, including drafting announcements, talking points, and campaign materials.
  • Monitor engagement metrics such as open rates, click‑throughs, and participation to inform optimization and continuous improvement.
  • Support two‑way communication efforts by helping manage feedback channels, forums, surveys, and employee or student engagement touchpoints.
  • Help maintain documentation, templates, and communication guidelines to support consistency and efficiency.
  • Stay current on internal communications best practices, tools, and digital engagement trends.
  • Participate in special events and institutional initiatives related to employee or student engagement.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
