About The Position

Join the City of Greeley’s Water Quality Program as a seasonal intern, working up to 40 hours per week. The Water Quality Intern will play a vital role in assisting with distribution system and source water quality monitoring for regulatory compliance, customer concerns, and drinking water treatment optimization. Additional responsibilities include performing field and laboratory quality control and quality assurance procedures, assisting with laboratory analysis needs for the Source Water Monitoring Program, and performing data entry and reporting activities. The duration of this assignment is up to 1,040 hours or six months, whichever occurs first.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid driver’s license with a good driving record and two years of experience driving.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and experience with spreadsheets, databases, and word processing software.
  • Ability to visualize and analyze data using basic statistics.
  • Ability to read maps and navigate to sampling sites within the City of Greeley.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills; including interpersonal relations skills.
  • Attention to detail, critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent customer service and public relations skills.
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions and safety procedures.
  • Emotional intelligence and professionalism are required.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in environment science, chemistry, biology, or related field.
  • Experience with water quality field sampling or analysis in a water quality laboratory, or a closely related combination of experience and education.
  • Familiarity with Colorado Primary Drinking Water Regulations.
  • Ability to communicate in Spanish preferred.
  • Experience with R.
  • Experience with GIS.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate with the Water Quality Technician on regulatory compliance sampling, including disinfection byproducts, chlorites, and chlorine residual analysis.
  • Conduct source water quality sampling using established protocols in lakes, streams, and ditches
  • Coordinate with the Water Quality Analyst to assist with laboratory analyses such as Chlorophyll-a, HPC, TSS, TOC, alkalinity, and hardness.
  • Maintain inventory of monitoring and laboratory equipment, reagents, and standards.
  • Assist with customer inquiries regarding drinking water quality, investigate complaints, and compose result notification reports.
  • Assist in calibration and maintenance of a variety of equipment, including ProDSS YSI Sonde, YSI EXO 3 Sonde, Hach HQ4200 Multimeter Probe, Hach DR900, Hach Colorimeter II, IDEXX Water Microbiology Testing System, and Kemio Heavy Metals System.
  • Collect data in accordance with Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QAQC) protocols; accurately record data and maintain complex datasets.
  • Assist in projects and programs as directed.
