The Neighborhood and Community Planning Department has an opportunity for a highly motivated undergraduate or graduate student seeking to enhance the community through the Historic Preservation and Neighborhood Services Division. We do this as a diverse team of individuals who care about making a difference. We’re looking for a driven individual to join our team! The Intern will assist the Historic Preservation Officer and Neighborhood Services Manager with special projects and clerical tasks to improve the effectiveness of the department.

Requirements

  • Candidates must be currently enrolled in, or have recently completed, a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree program.
  • Must possess a valid Texas Driver’s License.
  • Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and other business applications.
  • Customer service standards and protocol.
  • Current principles and practices of a productive, customer service-oriented office.
  • City organization, operations, policies and procedures.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Coordinating, prioritizing and performing a variety of administrative duties with attention to detail.
  • Demonstrating initiative.
  • Organizing and managing time efficiently and effectively.
  • Service oriented and flexible to meet changing business needs.
  • Responding to inquiries and providing excellent customer service.
  • Establishing and maintaining positive working relationships with guests, City employees, citizens, external agencies, applicants, vendors and the general public ensuring the delivery of high-quality customer service.
  • Performing accurate data entry and maintaining departmental records and files.
  • Possesses and applies intermediate internet and research skills.
  • Able to exhibit a high level of confidentiality.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Historic Preservation Officer with collecting historic resource data in the field using Survey123 software.
  • Assist Neighborhood Services Manager, Senior Health Specialist and the Administrative Assistant in the Neighborhood Services Division.
  • Assists in ensuring the consistent delivery of excellent customer service to citizens and visitors.
  • Responds to public inquiries and provides customer service in person and via telephone; provides information to the public; receives and directs calls and walk-in customers to appropriate personnel or department.
  • Communicates in a timely and professional manner with citizens, visitors, City employees, vendors, contractors, applicants, and the public, representing the best interests of the City, anticipating needs, and resolving customer service inquiries and other issues.
  • Monitors office and is active in presenting an organized, comfortable, safe, and welcoming environment.
  • Conducts a variety of general office duties including data entry, filing, and copying documents, and preparing correspondence.
  • Assists the Historic Preservation Officer and Neighborhood Services Division staff in updating and maintaining departmental documents including records, forms, logs and spreadsheets.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.
