About The Position

Position Summary: The candidate chosen to fulfill the City’s internship position will be involved with projects alongside the day to day duties involved in the operation of a municipality. The intern will gain experience working in a professional office environment and out in the field, and may have the opportunity to directly interact with internal city employees, department heads, members of the general public, and other municipalities. The intern will report directly to the department head or designee in the department to which assigned. Essential Duties: Provides entry- to intermediate-level professional services, under supervision of professional staff and/or personnel, as appropriate to the day-to-day operating objectives of the department. Undertakes and/or participates in projects and programs designed to develop professional skills and expertise appropriate to the needs of the organization. Participates in the planning and implementation of unit projects and initiatives within area of expertise. Receives guidance, training, and mentoring from professional personnel in planning and carrying out activities and assignments. As appropriate to the position and as specified by department management, conducts original research and prepares reports based on findings, to include recommendations or alternative proposals for action. Attend meetings with department heads, council meetings, and other boards and committee meetings that may include the general public. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite programs.
  • Ability to understand and follow complex, detailed technical instructions.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Communication skills including experience with public speaking and delivering presentations.
  • Ability to work well and interact with members of the public as well as members of the City’s various departments, Department Heads and City Council.
  • Desire to participate in and contribute to the City at the grass roots level.
  • Good sense of appropriate office attire.
  • Ability to study unfamiliar material, condense that material into its most essential elements and create a cohesive document.
  • Ability to conduct research and interact professionally with other municipalities.
  • Self-motivated, good organizational skills, detail-oriented, ability to prioritize, multitask and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
