About The Position

This application is for a 12-week internship role from June - August 2026, with resume review beginning in January 2026. Biogen is hiring for two positions within its Global Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) team. The intern will support strategic initiatives that advance Biogen’s global EHS programs and sustainability goals, gaining exposure to enterprise-level EHS systems, global compliance frameworks, and programs that foster a proactive safety culture across all regions and functions. The role involves working directly with global EHS leaders on projects aimed at strengthening governance, enabling data-driven decision-making, and supporting continuous improvement across worldwide operations. This internship is suitable for students interested in EHS, sustainability, environmental science, life sciences, public health, or related fields, specifically supporting the implementation, improvement, and monitoring of EHS programs across both RTP sites.

Requirements

  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Solid communication skills and comfort working with diverse groups (operators, engineers, contractors, leaders).
  • Basic understanding of workplace safety concepts and/or interest in learning (PPE, LOTO, hazard communication, ergonomics, chemical safety).
  • Ability to perform field work, including walking mechanical spaces, observing activities, and interacting with operations teams.
  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S.
  • At least 18 years of age prior to the scheduled start date.
  • Currently enrolled in an accredited community college, college, university or skills program/apprenticeship.
  • Current enrollment in a degree program in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Occupational Safety & Health, Public Health, Biology, Chemistry, or a related field.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with OSHA, EPA, NFPA 70E, RCRA, or ISO 14001/45001 concepts (coursework or experience).
  • Prior experience in a manufacturing, lab, biotech, construction, or technician environment.
  • Comfort with data tools (Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, dashboards, mobile inspection tools).
  • Interest in physical safety, risk assessment, and continuous improvement methods.
  • Creative skills for developing posters, job aids, or communications a plus

Responsibilities

  • Help perform Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), document risks, and verify implementation of controls.
  • Support EHS in updating SOPs, work instructions, and visual one-pagers.
  • Assist with identifying gaps in interstitial entry, working at heights, confined space, LOTO, and electrical safety programs.
  • Conduct routine inspections across labs, manufacturing suites, mechanical spaces, and construction locations.
  • Support internal audits, and readiness activities.
  • Assist with chemical storage, hazardous waste accumulation inspections, and RCRA compliance tasks.
  • Support EHS communications: Safety Week content, recognition programs (e.g., BERT shout-outs), awareness posters, and digital signage.
  • Assist with development of training materials on topics such as chemical safety, emergency response, PPE, ergonomics, and general safety expectations.
  • Participate in CHAMPS, Our Impact, and other culture-building initiatives.
  • Help maintain EHS metrics dashboards (injuries, inspections, audit findings, permits, waste, etc.).
  • Assist with entries in systems such as myEHS, Veeva, 3E, waste tracking, and contractor safety logs.
  • Support trending and root cause analysis for incidents, near misses, and observations.
  • Participate in emergency drills, walkthroughs, and cross-functional meetings.
  • Provide operational support to ensure both sites meet EHS expectations, internal standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Other duties as assigned based on site priorities and intern strengths.
