As an Insurance Accountant, you’ll be responsible for recording revenue and expenses associated with our insurance operations involving related and unrelated parties. This includes accounting for premiums and related premium taxes and assessments, commissions earned by Hagerty, and commissions payable to brokers.

Requirements

  • Strong attention to detail and a high level of accuracy in all work.
  • Excellent analysis, problem solving and communication skills.
  • Organized and comfortable working in a fast-paced environment.
  • Handle multiple responsibilities, adhere to strict deadlines, and manage competing priorities.
  • Proven ability to work both independently and collaboratively with all levels of employees.
  • Thorough understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Knowledgeable in property and casualty insurance accounting concepts and terminology.
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting.
  • Experience in public accounting or within the property & casualty industry.
  • Proficient in MS Office Products, with advanced skills in Excel.

Nice To Haves

  • CPA designation preferred.
  • Experience with ERP systems helpful (Workday, Oracle, Peoplesoft).
  • Familiarity with public company requirements, including Sarbanes Oxley and key regulations, if applicable.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare complex supporting workpapers, reconciliations, and journal entries in support of insurance operations.
  • Coordinate settlement of accounts with external insurance companies and brokers.
  • Reconcile and settle intercompany and related party balances on a monthly basis.
  • Calculate and record expected profit sharing and override commissions.
  • Provide commentary on flux analysis for assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Work closely with FP&A team to develop budgets and forecasts and to explain variances.
  • Maintain documentation of processes and procedures, updating internal controls as needed, and supporting SOX compliance.
  • Assist with quarterly and annual SEC reporting, annual audits and insurance department exams.
  • Seek to be well-informed on transactions and initiatives that may impact accounting practices, financial statements, or financial results.
  • Perform ad-hoc projects and tasks with minimal guidance and supervision.
  • Identify and recommend opportunities to improve efficiency or reduce costs.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to business leaders.
  • For SOX compliant roles, responsible for designing, executing, and documenting internal controls where they have been identified as owners to prevent errors in financial reporting, processes, and business operations. Including attestation to the completeness, accuracy, and compliance of all financial reporting data, where applicable.
