The School of Social Science and Global Studies at The University of Southern Mississippi invites applications for an instructor or assistant teaching professor in anthropology, with a specialization in archaeology, to begin in August 2026. This is a permanent, full-time, non-tenure-track position with opportunities for promotion. A successful candidate who does not have a PhD by August 2026 will be hired as an instructor. Information about the School of Social Science and Global Studies can be found here. The school is seeking an archaeologist with a commitment to teaching and mentoring students. The position is open to all topical and geographical areas of specialization in archaeology, but preference will be given to those who best complement program needs and have a plan for training students in career-ready skills. We also value the ability to work across sub-disciplines of anthropology and across disciplines within the school and university to contribute to inter-disciplinary programs. Teaching responsibilities may include the following classes: four-field introduction to anthropology, introduction to archaeology/biological anthropology, methods classes including a regional field school, heritage and policy course, and electives in the applicant's areas of expertise. Candidates must be able to teach across different modalities, including online and face-to-face courses.
