About The Position

The teacher of the Visually Impaired is responsible for contributing to the educational system as a unit and to the growth of each student assigned to the homebound program. The VI teacher shall assist each student to develop skills, to acquire knowledge, and to realize his or her potential.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution of higher learning.
  • A valid Texas teaching certificate, with required endorsements for subject/level assigned.
  • Teacher of the Visually Impaired Certification
  • Ability to communicate with students and parents.
  • Must have a general understanding of the students’ individual needs.

Responsibilities

  • Keeps informed of and comply with state, district, and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers.
  • Develops and implements plans for the curriculum program assigned.
  • Prepares lessons that reflect accommodation for individual student differences.
  • Presents instruction according to guidelines established by Texas Education Agency, board policies, and administrative regulations.
  • Employs a variety of instructional techniques and media, consistent with the needs and capabilities of the student involved.
  • Assist students in analyzing and improving methods and habits of study.
  • Tests students, records grades, and sends progress reports to parents.
  • Assesses the accomplishments of students on a regular basis.
  • Establishes and maintains open lines of communication with students and their parents.
  • Establishes control in the home/classroom/hospital setting and administers discipline in accordance with board policies and administrative regulations.
  • Maintains accurate and complete records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulation.
  • Assists in the selection of books, equipment, and other instructional materials.
  • Attends and participates in faculty meetings when appropriate.
  • Participates in the in-service education program.
  • Assumes responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned and may sponsor outside activities approved by the school.
  • Maintains a professional relationship with all colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
  • Cooperates with other members of the staff in planning and implementing instructional goals, objectives, and methods.
  • Works to maintain and improve professional skills and knowledge.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Special Education Services Director.
