City College of San Francisco is looking to recruit full time, (40 hours/week), full year (260 days/fiscal year) Institutional Police Officers. Under the direction of the Chief of Police or his/her designee, the Institutional Police Officer works in the San Francisco Community College District Police Department and acts as a peace officer pursuant to Section 830.32(a) of the California Penal Code and Section 72330 of the California Education Code. The San Francisco Community College District Police Department is a Peace Officers' Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) participant. The officer's primary functions are to provide protection of life and property and to enforce state and local laws and college policies within the jurisdiction of San Francisco Community College District campuses. In accordance with District policy, the San Francisco Community College District Police Department is a sworn unarmed department. Employees are required to sign a memorandum acknowledging their understanding of the district's policy in this regard.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent (GED or High School Proficiency Examination)
  • One (1) year of experience as a police officer, member of a military police unit or other work involving the safeguarding of life and property
  • Possession of a valid California Driver License
  • Possession of a Basic P.O.S.T. Certificate (issued by California Department of Justice, Commission of Peace Officers Standards and Training) will be required prior to field work assignment and within twelve (12) months of hire date, as a condition of employment.
  • Must possess satisfactory hearing capabilities and visual acuity of at least 20/100 correctable to at least 20/30 in each eye.
  • Candidates must complete and pass an employment, character and background investigation to determine fitness for employment as an institutional Police Officer.
  • A comprehensive personal history statement must be completed, and all statements by the candidates are subject to verification.
  • Candidates will be required to pass a polygraph test, a drug test and a psychological screening.
  • Applicants who are untruthful during their background investigation will be disqualified.
  • A review of judicial and driving records will be conducted.
  • Applicants must possess a valid driver's license at the time of appointment and have a current history of careful and responsible motor vehicle operation.
  • Prior negligent operator probation, license suspension, drunk reckless, or hit and run driving, or multiple moving violations may be cause for disqualification, regardless of where they occurred.
  • At the time of application or thereafter, any type of vehicle-related probation, or driving without a valid license, or driving without insurance will disqualify.
  • Prior to appointment, candidates must be determined by a licensed physician to be free from any physical condition that would adversely affect the ability to perform the duties of a Peace Officer.
  • Candidates must pass a medical examination by a designated City physician and must meet minimum standards for hearing, color vision, visual acuity and other prescribed physical standards.

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of 60 units of college credits preferably in the Administration of Justice field.
  • Two years of verifiable work experience.
  • One year of law enforcement experience.
  • Specialized training in law enforcement, security or related field.

  • Ability to take initiative, problem solve and work independently with good judgment about when to seek direction.
  • Understanding of regulations related to handling of confidential student information.

Responsibilities

  • Administers first aid to students, staff and/or visitors for the purpose of providing immediate emergency medical care.
  • Arrests individuals engaging in illegal activities for the purpose of apprehending suspects to prevent further illegal activities.
  • Collaborates with community agencies (e.g. law enforcement, courts, health care, etc.) for the purpose of addressing individual cases and/or taking action regarding investigations, criminal activities, gang activities, vandalism, etc. for the safety and security of the college sites.
  • Communicates safety and security policies and enforcement procedures to students, staff and visitors for the purpose of ensuring their understanding of such information, the potential consequences of violation, and building a community relationship.
  • Enforces applicable laws for the purpose of responding appropriately in accordance to federal, state, District, and municipal laws, rules, and policies.
  • Enforces college policies as necessary (e.g. student ticketing, disciplinary issues, etc.) for the purpose of implementing campus Police Department processes and student code of conduct.
  • Escorts students, assigned personnel and/or visitors for the purpose of providing safety and providing site security.
  • Implements safety escorts (e.g. students, staff, visitors, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring safe movement on campus.
  • Investigates potential campus crimes and/or student related community incidents for the purpose of resolving conflicts, taking appropriate action, and/or referring to outside agency for resolution.
  • Participates in unit meetings, in-service training, workshops, etc. for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform job functions.
  • Patrols college facilities (e.g. grounds, roads, buildings, adjacent areas, parking lots, etc.) for the purpose of providing visibility, maintaining security, and deterring criminal activities.
  • Prepares a variety of documents (e.g. police reports, citations, incident reports, activity logs, memos, letters, procedures, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference, and/or conveying information.
  • Presents information in a variety of settings (e.g. classrooms, meetings, staff orientations, etc.) for the purpose of informing individuals of public safety, law enforcement procedures and individual rights.
  • Provides traffic and parking control for the purpose of maintaining efficient traffic flow and use of parking lot/s.
  • Reports safety issues or concerns (e.g. to maintenance department ( broken fixtures, insufficient lighting), etc.) for the purpose of maintaining a safe environment, free of hazards.
  • Responds to a variety of situations (e.g. accidents, injuries, vandalism, suspicious activities, alarms, etc.) for the purpose of making appropriate response and taking the appropriate action to resolve immediate safety and/or security concerns.
  • Responds calls for services from a variety of sources regarding campus security issues for the purpose of providing information, direction and/or referral for addressing inquiry.
  • Testifies in court proceedings for the purpose of providing information regarding alleged illegal activity.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
