About The Position

JOB PURPOSE AND REPORTING STRUCTURE: Under the direction of the Production Supervisor, the Lead Person is responsible for coordinating the activities of the department to ensure efficient operations and maximizes production of each employee. Under the supervision of the Quality Manager, the Inspector A inspects raw material and products, requiring exacting tolerance, at various stages of the production process; compiles and evaluates data to determine deviation from quality standards; and instructs assisting personnel on correct procedures as required; perform MPI as needed. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Includes the following, other duties may be assigned. Receive general instructions and communicate them to departmental personnel. Assist and coordinate with Management on daily tasks, assignments and workflow. Explain tasks required such as operational sequence, tooling and equipment requirements, necessary adjustments, and quality requirements to departmental personnel. Regularly perform tasks similar to those being performed by other departmental personnel. Analyze and evaluate equipment, material and quality problems. Recommend measures to improve the process, departmental performance, and product quality. In the absence of Management, maintain departmental operations to ensure coordination and integration of workflow, timely production, schedules, and utilization of personnel, equipment and facilities. Coordinate and expedite the flow of production activities / work assignments between work shifts and machine groups. Use indicators, micrometers, and other precision measuring equipment to check dimensions produced in the department Process all necessary documentation and paperwork to include production data and time reports. Train and guide department personnel on correct procedures, production policies, safety precautions, preventive maintenance of equipment, and the use of inspection equipment. Ensure compliance with all quality, housekeeping, and safety regulations. Assist Management in developing and implementing long-range and short-term strategies and operating policies to achieve departmental goals and objectives. Recommend change of status for departmental personnel. Notify Management of problems or potential problems with departmental personnel. Work with Managements to resolve production, quality, equipment and manpower problems. Interpret detailed instructions, blueprints, work orders, and routing sheets to determine specification requirements. Plan inspection procedures and techniques as necessary. Determine equipment and tools needed for inspection. Test products for variety of characteristics such as size, dimensions, contour, surface characteristics, and gear geometry features. Perform inspection on first piece, in-process, purchased parts and finished pieces. Record test data and prepare inspection reports as necessary. Evaluate data and write reports to validate or indicate deviations from existing standards. Route product for additional operations. Analyze inspection results and make suggestions to alleviate quality problems. Communicate with Shop Supervisor, Engineering or Quality Department on noted deviations of quality. Perform magnetic particle inspection when required. Recommend modifications of existing quality or production standards to achieve optimum quality within limits of equipment capability. Set up gages used in tests. Calibrate and maintain gaging devices. Modify or create gauges for unusual tests as needed. Train and guide assisting personnel on inspection processes and equipment. Follow all clean up and housekeeping procedures.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • One to three years of trades training or five years of equivalent experience in CNC machining required.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, & divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, fractions, decimals, & percent
  • Ability to read specifications and gauges and to complete standard production documentation
  • Ability to operator a forklift truck
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 40 lbs.
  • Requires three years of trades training or five years machine shop experience with inspection equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret complex documents such as customer prints, work plans and other correspondence
  • Ability to communicate effectively with employees at all levels of the organization

  • Ability to train and instruct other employees
  • High energy and demonstrated positive attitude
  • Ability to calculate figures using decimals and fractions.
  • Requires the ability to operate various tools and equipment to include coordinate measuring machine (CMM), gear geometry checkers, micrometers, special instrumentation, indicators, and all other inspection equipment.
  • Requires a good understanding of all gear checking procedures and a basic knowledge of non-destructive testing (NDT)
