About The Position

Join FDOT and be part of the team that works as one to improve safety, enhance mobility and inspire innovation in the Florida transportation system. This role involves performing independent inspections of drainage and concrete work (e.g., sidewalks, roadway features) within the State Right of Way to ensure compliance with FDOT standards, plans, and safety regulations. It also includes verifying materials and construction through field testing and site monitoring, and reviewing Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) setups to ensure safe work zones and correct placement of devices. The position requires preparing detailed reports, documentation, and payment packages to support contractor work and contract administration. Field surveys (signs, guardrails, roadway inventory) are conducted, and data is entered into systems such as RCI. The Inspector II participates in pre-construction meetings, coordinates with contractors and stakeholders, and assists with maintenance contracts, plan reviews, and public records requests. Requirements

  • Knowledge of performing field inspections of worksites for compliance to Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) Roadway Standards
  • Knowledge of entering and retrieving information from a computer database
  • Skills in communicating technical information verbally and in writing
  • Skills in understanding and interpreting plans, specifications, design standards and manuals
  • Skills in dealing with internal and external customers in a courteous manner
  • Skills in personal computer (PC) and understanding of databases
  • Skills in organizing records and handling multiple tasks and interruptions

  • Complete Construction Math and Plans Reading self-study courses within 11 months of appointment
  • Obtain the Advanced Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) certification within one year and maintain it
  • Obtain the Qualified Stormwater Management Inspector certification (Florida Department of Environmental Protection through the Stormwater, Erosion and Sediment Control Inspector Training Program) within one year and maintain it
  • Valid Class E Driver License with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy
  • High School Diploma or Certificate of High School Equivalency

Responsibilities

  • Perform independent complex technical assignments to accomplish inspection and monitoring of work activities performed within the state Right of Way.
  • Verify that work is performed according to all State and Federal specifications, plans, permits, policies, procedures, statutes and rules.
  • Perform approved testing techniques through the use of hand tools, gauges and/or instruments to ensure materials used conform to Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) requirements.
  • Prepare records and reports for work completed and other related documents accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Prepare all documentation in order to validate payments to roadway contractors.
  • Perform interpretation of governing documents related to authorized Maintenance of Traffic device usage, installation/placement and materials to ensure safe work zones.
  • Review work site activities for conformity to safety regulations and takes corrective measures when deficiencies are noted.
  • Conduct surveys of signs, guardrail, and attenuators as required by procedures.
  • Provide survey of roadway items to be inventoried for Roadway Characteristics Inventory (RCI).
  • Fill out data coding sheet and enters roadway data into computer data base as needed.
  • Gather data and perform preliminary reviews for maintenance contract needs.
  • Assist in the preparation of maintenance contracts.
  • Prepare specifications as needed for use in maintenance contracts.
  • Conduct/attend pre-work conferences on maintenance contracts and attends/conducts meetings with contractors/utility owners/permitees throughout life of projects as assigned.
  • Act as a representative of the Department on all issues related to contracts and permits.
  • Issue work documents on contracts as directed.
  • Perform plans reviews for constructability and adherence to Department Standards and specifications.
  • Provide comments on Department policies and procedures as requested.
  • Assemble payment packages for contracts in accordance with established processes.
  • Assist in identifying and producing documents in relation to public records request.
  • Prepare project correspondence and records as necessary during the administration of contracts through the use of various computer programs.
  • Enter/assist with the preparation of documents to be added to the electronic document management system as required.
  • Prepare and issue work documents on contracts as requested.
