About The Position

Under direction of an IT Supervisor II, the incumbent serves as a Senior System Administrator supporting Caltrans Enterprise Server Hosting Unit. The incumbent is based in the Sacramento Headquarters office and provides statewide support, leadership and expertise for Caltrans business units. MAJOR FUNCTIONS: The incumbent works collaboratively with management and staff to provide subject matter expertise to IT Staff and Program personnel in all aspects of design, architecture, and implementation of Caltrans Enterprise Virtual Infrastructure. The incumbent shall display a thorough and comprehensive knowledge of System Administration practices and collaborate with a team that is responsible for the successful operation of the Virtual Infrastructure, which consists of VMware virtualization and HPE Servers. The incumbent will be responsible for administering VMware, operating system upgrades, patches, management of externally connected storage, and provide expertise in solving server-related issues that may involve said hardware, software, or firmware problems. The incumbent will have thorough knowledge of overlying technologies which includes but not limited to; Active Directory, SAN/FLASH Storage, Backup, Linux and Windows Server Operating Systems. The incumbent will assist Server and Storage Management section team members in analyzing new technologies, proposing solutions, and leading projects to implement them.

Requirements

  • Thorough and comprehensive knowledge of System Administration practices
  • Thorough knowledge of overlying technologies which includes but not limited to; Active Directory, SAN/FLASH Storage, Backup, Linux and Windows Server Operating Systems.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license is required when operating a state owned or leased vehicle.
  • Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) required. Failure to submit a SOQ will disqualify candidates from the hiring process.
  • Possession of Minimum Qualifications will be verified prior to interview and/or appointment.
  • Resume is required and must be included.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience managing and securing server operating systems (Windows, VMWare)
  • Experience with VCenter, Microsoft Active Directory, Monitoring and networking technologies and concepts
  • Experience in enterprise server hardware/software and VMware virtualization technologies
  • Knowledge and experience in application, storage, database, and cloud technologies
  • Critical thinking to tackle and troubleshoot complex technical problems.
  • Effective communication and writing skills.
  • Ambitious, collaborative, and willing to learn.
  • Any VMWare, Microsoft Certification
