About The Position

Coordinator, marketer, photographer, videographer and spokesperson for the state’s transportation Highway Divisions 7 and 9. This position involves planning, developing, executing and evaluating communication strategies and plans that promote the department and its programs to both internal and external audiences. This employee reports directly to the Assistant Director of Communications. The employee is responsible for writing news releases, articles, and communication related materials. This employee will also be responsible for shooting, editing, and producing video stories, social content and other multimedia elements that support the mission of NCDOT and Highway Divisions 7 and 9. Additionally, this position will serve as the primary public outreach representative for the divisions. This position will update and maintain public-facing project information, help gather information for public records requests and be in an on-call rotation. This position will assist the Communications Office during crisis situations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, public affairs, media journalism, English, or a related field from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of experience in communications, public relations, or publicity work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Writing Samples Required.

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrated ability to write and edit using AP Style
  • Demonstrated ability to understand and synthesize complex information and write in a clear, succinct, storytelling style
  • Experience with media relations, including on-camera interviews
  • Experience with photo and video shooting, editing and storytelling
  • Knowledge of social media platforms including Facebook, X, Nextdoor and YouTube
  • Skill in organization and demonstrated ability to work under tight deadlines
  • Experience in content management systems (Sprout Social, Meltwater, SharePoint, Drupal) and Microsoft Office
  • Flexibility to travel and adjust work schedule to meet the needs of large-scale projects and crisis situations.
