Position Summary This position requires the full understanding and active participation in fulfilling the mission of Saddleback Medical Center. The employee shall support MemorialCare Medical Centers’ strategic plan and participate in and advocate performance improvement/patient safety activities. The Infection Control Professional (ICP) position supports our hospital-wide infection program within the Performance Improvement department at Saddleback Medical Center. The ICP is primarily responsible for daily surveillance, monitoring, and implementation of infection prevention practices to ensure patient and staff safety, as well as regulatory compliance. The ICP works under the guidance of the Infection Prevention Program Manager to ensure adherence to infection control standards, collect and report data, and support outbreak investigations. The ICP focuses on daily surveillance, unit rounds, compliance monitoring and education. The role helps support the infection prevention program strategies, including preventing healthcare associated infections (HAIs) and infection control compliance.

Requirements

  • Minimum one (1) year experience in infectious disease prevention at a healthcare organization, preferred.
  • Possesses a solid understanding of medical and nursing principles, patient care management, and foundational sciences including microbiology, pathology, and immunology.
  • Bachelor’s degree in science or clinically related field required.
  • A combination of equivalent knowledge and/or relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of a degree.
  • Certification in Infection Control (CIC) completion required within agreed timeframe.

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrates ability to apply medical statistics and biostatistics in clinical and quality improvement settings preferred.
  • Working knowledge of and experience in the practice of epidemiological principles and infectious diseases as related to infection prevention and control preferred
  • Knowledge of and ability to demonstrate a comprehension of medical statistics/biostatistics, data analysis, and reporting of metrics to external agencies preferred.
  • Post-secondary education in a health-related field including but not limited to medicine, nursing, laboratory technology, public health, or biology, preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Works together with the Infection Prevention Program Manager in the identification of infectious disease processes and surveillance activities.
  • Actively participates in prevention and control of transmission of infectious agents, which is in alignment with the Infection Control Plan.
  • Assists Infection Prevention Program Manager with program oversight and ensures compliance with program and medical center policies, protocols, and guidelines.
  • Under the direction of the Infection Prevention Program Manager, uploads and imports accurate data into internal and external databases in a timely manner.
  • Tracks and reports hospital-acquired infection rates and creates data reports for dissemination and analysis.
  • Participates in the outbreak investigations and surveillance process.
  • In collaboration with the Infection Prevention Program Manager, assesses the need for, develops, and presents infection prevention education as needed.
  • Participates in Environment of Care and hospital rounds to ensure compliance with hospital infection prevention and control policies, including monitors compliance of personnel with isolation techniques.
  • Notifies the local public health agencies and/or regulatory bodies of reportable diseases in collaboration with the Infection Prevention Program Manager and department leadership.
  • Serves as a member of both hospital and system-wide meetings as an infection prevention representative.
